I have been looking around at different breeds and have decided i would love a king charles, does anyone have one who can offer me some advice?
I've been on a few sites and read up, but practical experience would be much appreciated :D

edit: i mean cavalier king charles, thanks

Make sure BOTH parents have had all the relevant health tests, as king charles suffer from a lot of health problems

Is it a King Charles or Cavalier King Charles, that you are interested in?

Mary Poppins on here has Cavaliers I am sure she will be able to advise you more on the breed. We had a Cavalier many years ago and they do suffer with heart problems, our was 9years old when we lost him to this.

Ours was extremely loving and great with other dogs, kids and cats, they do love their comfort and like to be with you all the time, we had seperation anxiety with ours.

Hi

I have 4 cavalier king charles spaniels. They are a different breed to King charles spaniels. King charles are more rare, have a flatter face, and are smaller in size.

Please take great care when buying a pup. Both parents should be heart checked by a vet cardiologist and certificates issued and should be seen. Also bva eye screened again certificates should be issued and seen.
There is a dreadful neurological condition called syrigomyelia. This can only be detected by MRI scan and only a few breeders are doing this screening
Please pm if you want any further help. Also cavaliertalk.com is an excellent siite It is full of excellent information and a brill forum.

Have to agree with all this, particularly the syrigomyelia, which is an awful problem but as with all breeds do be careful and go to a reputable breeder,
dont be put off by the problems Cavaliers have all breeds have something to worry about,
Having said that they are the most adorable and loving dog you could wish for perfect with children, and they love everybody
see a cavalier and you will see a wagging tail.

An excellent site for you is www.cavalierkingcharlesspaniels.co.uk

So sorry if my post sounded all negative. Here comes the positive.

They are the most adorable breed my 4 are such sweethearts. I have 2 rescue ex puppy farm breeding bitches and 2 rejects from breeders!

My rescue girls were in such a dreadful state when they came but responded brilliantly to training and learnig about the world. They are such loving and loyal girls inspite of their dreadful start in life.

Cavaliers are no couch potatoes though. My gang love a good walk every day for an hour to three or four. One of mine does agillity and is a star, another a P.A.T dog another a gundog without any training.... loves to retreive dead animals ... gross or what!

I have a daughter with special needs and the dogs are fine with her .
I cannot recommend them highly enough but as already stated care needs to be taken when obtaining you pup or dog.

There is a tri coloured 9mth boy in Whitehall Dog Rescue in Wakefield at the moment.

Thankyou all so much for the feedback, i have read up on the health problems a little but as someone already mentioned, there are problems with all breeds. I absolutely adore cavaliers, and have known a few people who owned them over the years (no longer in contact though unfortunately!). We are a very active, my sister has a one year old jack russel so we were thinking of taking them out for walks together, i'd read they are good with other dogs and have a good friendly temperment. Thanks Cavi Lover for pointing out what to look for, that's a lot more info than i'd already found :)

We went to Mablethorpe to get Ellie, but just be careful as we looked at a couple around linclon area they were in a terrible state, and theres someone who advertises in the Star from that area and they advertise puppies constantly,
if its the same ones we looked at they had loads of puppies but we weren;t allowed to see the mother and the puppies were all really dopey, I wanted one just to get them away but sense has to take over.

that may well have been the same person i was emailing, but she put me off by sounding too much like a saleswoman.
i'd definately be willing to travel to get the right cavi for us, as long as i can talk someone with a car into a road trip :)

The person who advertises in the Star is where I rescued my first dog from and what a sorry state she was in . Just a money machine.

Ive got a cavvy, beautiful temprement, loving animal, never been distructive or unclean in the house, a real lovely pet and brilliant with children .... however, she suffers with a variety of health problems that are common to the breed, she has eye medication because her tear ducts dont work, this causes lots of eye infections, she has a heart murmer and is medicated for that, she snores REALLY loud, thats becuse she has breathing difficulties as the breeders tend to like 'stuffed up' noses ... and shes only 7, i doubt she'll make old bones., If you do get a cavvy, just make sure its insured as it will be at the vets ... often

Thanks, we have moved to our new house now and are just about settled in, though the garden will need a bit of puppy-proofing before we can bring our new arrival home.
And pet insurance would have been first on my list anyway, don't want to take any chances.
We are looking for a bitch and leaning towards the blenhiems, but not massively important as long as she is happy and healthy! So if anyone knows of a reputable breeder i can contact please let me know.

Glad I stumbled across this thread.

When me and my partner are eventually settled into our own house, we are considering getting a cavvy as she used to have one a few years ago but had to part with his company due to family problems, she has missed him badly ever since.

It will take a lot of consideration though as we already have 4 cats between us, so, it could end up being an interesting situation, but, it won't be for a long time yet, it has been good though to read other people's advice and information on this adorable breed.

Right, i've been emailing a few people via the Kennel Club website and have had a few emails from one guy. He says the puppies are all healthy and he will be happy to take the pup back if we find she is not in good health. However i'm not sure about this part "We feel it's better to let them go at 6 weeks so they settle with the new family better and your own vet checks them so you know everything. (That's why the kennel club do insurance from 6 weeks)" sounds wrong to me, anyone? :?

6 weeks is way too early to be parted from mum....

When i have had litter's in the past...i wouldn't let them go before they were 8 weeks old..minimum...

Some times i didn't even advertise them till they were 8 weeks old so some stayed till they were 10/11 weeks old.
Trouble was...by then i was soooo attached to them...i didn't want to let them go..lol..

6 weeks....too early....by far

ooh no puppies should be at least 8 weeks, which personally I still think is a bit young,
I let Ellies puppies go at 12weeks after their first injection,
but thats just me I know most breeders do say 8 weeks, and as you have learnt even 6 weeks,
but I think its much too young for puppies or kittens to leave their mum, my opinon though probably lots of people will disagree.

I didn't want to let Ellies puppies go at all.

yeah, i was expecting him to say 8-10 weeks.. right, keep on searching then!

we had 2 when growing up they are ace dogs very loving and proper characters ..theyll provide hours of entertainment..make sure you an get a full breeding background and see both parents and rest of litter and breeding surroundings.....10-12 weeks usually after first jab is a good sign of a good breeder ...our breeder was located in wincobank i think and gave full pedigree history and option to take back if wasn't happy for reason i'll pm you with there details when i can lay my hands on em

just to update you all, we have just been to see the puppies, they were kept in a very nice family home and obviously well looked after and loved. the mother was just gorgeous, all pups were happy healthy little bundles of fur
so i have now reserved my little girl, and get to pick her up in about 4 weeks time; and so have to get things ready for her.. which is where i need some advice! i'm looking at dog beds and there's so many different kinds i'm confused, do we get a soft bed which will be comfy but probably get ripped to bits, or a hard one.. and what's the best way to toilet train her? :help:
