View Full Version : Cheap and cheerful body repairs?
Hi all,
Does anyone know of any relatively cheap and ok body repair shops?
I've removed my rear spoiler and need 8 holes welding up and a quick respray of my boot lid.
It doesn't need to be perfect as eventually I'll get a full respray but has to look better than the white duct tape I currently have there ;)
Cheers!
Paul.
There's a place on East Coast Road, just opposite Phil Smiths SAAB place, which charges £100 per panel for a respray. They may be worth asking about the bodywork too.
Cool thanks for that, I'll see what they say next month when I have cash again ;)
How big are the holes?
Can you not just fill them with some P38 / P40, then lightly sand them back, apply a spray of primer / and topcoat?
Plaster-Master 13-02-2008, 16:39 Be careful about cheap body shops as the finnish will rubbish more than likely.
Skatiechik 13-02-2008, 20:08 same for the more expensive bodyshops - see my thread bodywork help.

You pay for what you get. Cheap repairs are rubbish and you will only end up paying more in the long run to get it done properly.

If you read my post I said I will be getting a full respray eventually, so long as it keeps the water out and doesn't look as bad as duct tape I really don't care...
spooferman cheers!
convert, never done body work before myself, they're about 8mm diameter but lots of rust around some of them.

Its very easy to do a spoiler yourself, do a bit of research and have ago. Years ago I resprayed the full side of a cav sri with spray cans and buffed it and it looked mint.

What one person classes as mint isnt what another does. It is ni on impossible to get a good finish with spray cans. You would be buffing for years to get the finish right. Having said that the other half works in a body shop so all our work is done there by the proffesionals who now what they are doing and get a proper mint flawless finish. Just take a look at the sierra or fiesta both of which were done there.
Really? My dads got a bodyshop and Im shore he will not mind doing you a crap job for about £1200 the going rate for a respray.
Cheers, that's really useful.
Where did I say I wanted a crap job?
Why am I having to defend what I want doing to my own car?
The body shop that I mentioned doesn't do a crap job, they do a job which leaves the newly sprayed panel looking smarter than all the other panels on your car!
spooferman 21-02-2008, 11:01 cant be that good then, should be blown into the other pannels to blend the colour match

You cant match old paint to new. New paint is shiney old paint is often faded, patchy and sometimes loose. No amount of buffing will make it match the new.
Yes you blend in to adjacent panels but there is only so much blending you can do before you end up painting the whole thing.
Skatiechik 21-02-2008, 12:02 I beg to differ a good job means you can't tell the difference.
If you can then it isn't a good job.

Even if the old red paint has gone pink as it does, or the finish on the old paint is s!*t. A good job has an even colour distribution and a mirror finish. You cant match a good finish with old knackered paint. If you want a crap job that will match crap paint go ahead but personally i would always go for a perfect finish.
All of our cars have had paintwork and they are all spot on. The sierra had a full repaint 3 years ago, perfect finish no blemishs. The Fiesta had a full repaint 5/6 years ago and is having another this winter again perfect finish and the nissan is due to have some paintwork to repair someone elses dodgey paintwork.
Skatiechik 22-02-2008, 08:43 Hi,
I read it as you saying that old paint can't be matched - which you can.
Knackered paint is a different story all together and I agree with you.
Just because paint is old doesn't mean it is knackered. My old VDP had fantastic paint for 20 odd years old a real deep shine to it.

UV light attacks the pigments in the paint and makes it fade. Even a problem on modern cars. Look at a red car under street lights and you will spot any new paintwork. It will look like black and white.
Skatiechik 22-02-2008, 12:10 That was the point I was making originally though if the paint is still good albeit faded a good bodyshop will be able fade it in and match it exactly.
