Yeah, I know it's a crappy newbie question, but it's a pain and only needs a quick answer from someone to sort me out.

My Windows XP is opening the "common" folder on booting up. I know all I need to do is click on the "x" button to close it, but it's bugging me. There's nothing in startup to cause it - I think, so anyone any ideas?

editted bit...

The folder contains 2 sub-folders, PROFILES and BIN. One holds loads of .dll's, the other assorted files. There's also a WinCinemaMgr application in there that doesn't seem to do anything. For what it's worth. Probably shouldn't delete the folder itself.

Actually, not sure that there is an easy quick answer. There's not really any settings you can change to make XP open a folder on startup.

However one thing springs to mind. You've eliminated the startup folder. Now take a look at the other place where Windows will automatically run programs from on startup:

Start button, 'Run...', type "msconfig". The System Configuration Utility will run. Click the 'Startup' tab and see if you can see the folder there. If you can, untick it and click OK. Try rebooting again.

WinCinemaMgr is part of WinDVD Remote Control. Does that ring any bells?

And you say you 'probably shouldn't delete the folder'. I think thats probably true :)

Ant

had a similar problem with my PC opening the contents of C when the computer was first booted. I found it was NeroBackitup that was causing the problem - I did the same for a while by just clicking the close window button. It did however mean editing the registry, which as you may be aware, is not for the faint hearted.

Do you have Nero installed ?

Do you have multiple profiles on your Xp computer ?
