KTHFB 11-02-2008, 16:14 Not sure it's a break up song, but Tell Laura I Love Her always gets me purdyamos 11-02-2008, 17:54 Bristol was on the telly today so this will do: Portishead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF-GvT8Clnk) And in honour of her five grammies last night the one and only Amy Winehouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aygAu1x2uQo) D2J 11-02-2008, 18:14 I can only think of this one so far.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_cj4mfcE5A metaphoria 11-02-2008, 18:50 ...this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3-VZxkmmtI) Although-this music video (in my opinion) is excrutiatingly contrived in morbidity, and is awkward to watch. Doesn't do this great song any justice. Pretend it's not there. I know it's Over - the ultimate break up song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV-ykAlUA3Y metaphoria 11-02-2008, 19:30 Ohh but Into My Arms is a happy song. He loves her, he'll never hurt her. Ahhhhhhh! I know it's Over - the ultimate break up song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV-ykAlUA3Y Yes, I agree :) Have a listen to Martha Wainwright (BMFA) not able to post link as a family forum (language). That's a great girl's break up song. Jessica23 11-02-2008, 19:41 Yes, I agree :) Have a listen to Martha Wainwright (BMFA) not able to post link as a family forum (language). That's a great girl's break up song. Oh wow, I've listened to this song literally hundreds of times and never once has it occurred to me that it could be a break up song. I always took it as a general anti-patriarchal rant, particularly after I read an interview with MW when she said it was written about her Dad. But it does work brilliantly as a break up song, now I think about it... metaphoria 11-02-2008, 19:45 Oh wow, I've listened to this song literally hundreds of times and never once has it occurred to me that it could be a break up song. I always took it as a general anti-patriarchal rant, particularly after I read an interview with MW when she said it was written about her Dad. But it does work brilliantly as a break up song, now I think about it... I think I have read my own interpretation into the song, and if it was written about her dad then I've just misunderstood the meaning, but I suppose the sentiment is still the same :) UrbanCaveman 11-02-2008, 19:46 Bristol was on the telly today so this will do: Portishead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF-GvT8Clnk) Brilliant song off one of the greatest albums ever! I'm not very good at soppy songs, I'm really hard to please when it comes to emotions that soften me up. Jessica23 11-02-2008, 19:47 I think I have read my own interpretation into the song, and if it was written about her dad then I've just misunderstood the meaning, but I suppose the sentiment is still the same :) I think that once a song (or poem, or painting) is out there to be appreciated, whatever the artist thought it was about becomes irrelevant - I was just more surprised at myself for not ever seeing it as a break up song, because like I said, it's perfect! All together now...'BMFA' (repeat to fade...) metaphoria 11-02-2008, 19:51 I think that once a song (or poem, or painting) is out there to be appreciated, whatever the artist thought it was about becomes irrelevant Very true! Listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjQXMZe2ouk I think you'll like it :) haddockman 11-02-2008, 23:10 Love Really Hurts Without You - Billy Ocean Sounds so happy, but it's really sad!! JoeP 11-02-2008, 23:24 Not soemthing that I've thought much about, but a few titles that I occasionally used to trot out for the broken hearted in my community radio DJing days were : 'Can we still be friends' - Todd Rundgren 'Only love can break your heart' - Neil Young 'Take another little piece of my heart' - Janis Joplin 'One' - U2 (although Johnny Cash's version is really good!) 'Stay' - Lisa Leob magicaljen 12-02-2008, 07:37 Love Really Hurts Without You - Billy Ocean Sounds so happy, but it's really sad!! Noo!! Thats a happy happy song!! Makes me jig :P haddockman 12-02-2008, 09:21 Noo!! Thats a happy happy song!! Makes me jig :P Suppose you can interpret it both ways! A) That you're in love and away from the person for a while or B) That you've split up and not with them any more!! I've always seen the depressing side :P LitleMermaid 12-02-2008, 09:42 I've always seen the depressing side :P Typical  This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkphZvz24UE)song always gets me, everytime. Despite the tacky video, I think it definately qualifies as "soppy":D:love: EdnaKrabappe 12-02-2008, 09:49 Typical  This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkphZvz24UE)song always gets me, everytime. Despite the tacky video, I think it definately qualifies as "soppy":D:love: AhHHHHHH!! Westlife! Don't look directly at it! Sorry Little Mermaid. :hihi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un7TpYiotZA Anyway I love this one. It reminds me of a school sixth form trip I went on and watched 'Children of a lesser God' in which the song features. (A brilliant film if you've not seen it.) LitleMermaid 12-02-2008, 10:02 AhHHHHHH!! Westlife! Don't look directly at it! Sorry Little Mermaid. :hihi: :hihi::hihi::hihi: I know, I know!! But the sentiment of the song is very very soppy, and therefore very appropriate for this time of year:D I do love a good old love-fest:love: EdnaKrabappe 12-02-2008, 10:28 http://youtube.com/watch?v=c9XKqok2_VU Probably the more cynical side of me! http://youtube.com/watch?v=nxHcx7FO8nI Clean version given... I do prefer the other! http://youtube.com/watch?v=FH8ll5yHxWs Agent Orange 12-02-2008, 10:38 Edna... hope you arent gonna be bombarding us with these tunes at the meet?! :D Here are a few of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo-tp0JZvUA Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjcFHKOWc0Q samesame monkey 12-02-2008, 10:39 I really like cannonball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsVIVqmTjYw) by Damien Rice as well, really beautiful and understated. EdnaKrabappe 12-02-2008, 10:47 Edna... hope you arent gonna be bombarding us with these tunes at the meet?! :D Oh I'll have my twenty pences at the ready for the jukebox. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Burn-Baby-Burn-lyrics-Ash/73B48785E2795A8848256C140006A1FF If you don't listen this sounds quite an upbeat song... oh no it's not! http://youtube.com/watch?v=3IujMfJCW1k EdnaKrabappe 14-02-2008, 14:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSuurlKPLas Since I told you it's over... in this video. Tricky 14-02-2008, 14:47 Not sure it's a break up song, but Tell Laura I Love Her always gets me Break up in more ways than one. The Cranberries with Linger (http://pop.youtube.com/watch?v=01KQfcSCRbw&feature=related) is my Valentines Day 2008 nomination. Hecate 26-02-2008, 00:30 Has to be this one: 'Independence Day' (http://pool.cream.org/moozik/ani/Little%20Plastic%20Castle/11%20-%20Ani%20Difranco%20-%20Independence%20Day.mp3) - Ani DiFranco. And I have a strange fondness for this (http://pic7.pic.wretch.cc/photos/28/a/arielhsiao/files/blog.mp3) one (despite the dodgy spoken bit at the beginning). Or on a belated anti-Valentine's day note, you could have this (http://www.mattscdsingles.com/music/shakespears%20sister%20youre%20history.mp3) one or this (http://www.pappyleo.net/music/eurythmics/Eurythmics%20-%20Thorn%20in%20my%20Side.mp3)one. Hecate 26-02-2008, 12:51 ...Have a listen to Martha Wainwright (BMFA) not able to post link as a family forum (language). That's a great girl's break up song. I'd no idea that song was aimed at her father when I heard it for the first time, particularly given the apparently obvious nature of this lyric: And I've been poked & stoked It's all smoke, there's no more fire Only desire For you, whoever you are Plus, of course the title is superb for a break up song. The rest is a little ambiguous in retrospect, though the more you read about the Wainwrights, the more you understand her inspiration. PS. Rufus Wainwright does a lovely camp version of 'Careless Whisper' with Ben Folds, which is a break up song of sorts. |
