View Full Version : What do you look for first off in this forum?
What do you do first thing on here, like i go first and scroll down and start at General Chat, go up to History, then Sheff Chat, then i go back down to Entertainment, and if nothings going on much i go to Expert, seems like it's my habbit now to do it that way.
Don't care much for the Birthday parts ect, also i just read certain members views that are always interesting, i hate re reading my own for some reason, i'm sure some forum member will tell me why !
After being on the forum this long im only just getting use to peoples names, i forget who said what, am i the only one, well don't answer that im sure i am. but get my meaning !
Most of the time i will just select 'View New Posts' and then go through looking for anything that takes my fancy. Then i'll go to the 'Ask An Expert' forum and check for anything i may have missed and then i'll start scavenging through the other forums for something interesting.
There's probably only 20-30 names i remember on here off the top of my head but my memory normally gets jogged when reading someone's post.
Come on now, im sure some one has a reply, ill be number 1 anyhow make it look like someone had a view.
Don't care for Pre Election Politics much either, they get very repetitious after a while, don't they.?
I mostly make General Sheffield Chat my first port of call here, looking for local news and views.. Then I'd go to either Entertainment or General Chat.
Being a Mod I check on any reported posts first.... :)
Then I have a quick scout through the 'latest posts' as given by the 'View New Posts' link.

Hey Poppins,
Sure you are not the only one who can,t find things. This Forum is nothing like the one I use here. I can,t find a thing but when I do get time to look around I,m embarrased that I find an answer to some of my letters. I ususally got to the Expats and History of Sheffield. When I get a mail telling me someone has replied I go to the site but can,t find it. Maybe I must be stupid or something (nocomments here)
Regardless I have great fun here Memorise a few names but they nearly all come up with great topics I can relate to. going to make try out JOE and Vidsters method All the best
Regards Vera
muddycoffee 26-02-2005, 22:45 1st , I look as some of my
forum e-mails eagerly looking for replies to things i've posted, next I look at
new posts.
I enjoy history and have lots of local history books and will eagarly look up something if I can find it to help someone with a local historical point.
And I often get back late from the pub and just read. I am reluctant to post when drunk as [everyone likes a drink but nobody loves a drunk]
But sometimes I like to have a go, and there you are. I never delete it when I'm sober and slightly more guarded because by then it's history and Que será.
Kristian 26-02-2005, 22:45 I go to view new posts to see what's happening at the moment. Then I click on search site, and search for my own username; that pulls up all the threads I've posted on, that others have posted on since. Useful for finding replies to your own replies, and you don't get thousands of e-mails like when you subscribe to a thread!

'Scuse me if I'm teaching ya to suck eggs (yeah, yeah, no crude jokes please.....!:P ), but have you noticed that the threads you've replied on have a black spot in the middle of the envelope at the left hand side of the title? It'd just save you searching on your name.
And it took me ages to notice it.

I have noticed but didn't for ages; that's what I used to do, but it takes too long. I find it much quicker my way!
Thanks though Hon!

Do exactly the same here. (and on one or two of the other vB powered forums I frequent)!
Never failed yet.
Kristian 26-02-2005, 23:23 Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how 'view new posts' actually works?
Sometimes it brings loads of threads up, and sometimes hardly any. Clearly, this depends on how busy the forum is at that time, but there doesn't seem to be much consistency with regards to how old the posts have to be to be classed as new.
Does that make sense? It is late, and I've had a glass of wine!

I always look for any soup related posts first, and work my way down from there.
Kristian 26-02-2005, 23:26 I'm gonna start posting the word soup at the end of my posts just to wind ya now!

BoroughGal 26-02-2005, 23:27 I have to admit, I don't do it, but on your recommendations, I'm gonna start trying it.
Ooooh and pass the wine!

I read expats first probably because I usually post there so look foranswers. then it's a toss up between sheffield and general which I do next. Then ask the expert.. miscelanious has interesting posts sometimes and finally I'm bored is a last resort.

It's got something to do with your internet cookies and when you log on and off....
I read Gen SHeff Chat, Gen Chit Chat, Ents Chat then Noticeboards and Expert and that's me done :)
If I'm back on more than once in a day then I use the new posts button.
Most of what I post is in chit chat so I'll check the threads I'm subscribed to and then have a look around at other threads. If I can't find anything there I'll go to Sheffield Chat and also open up the chat room if there's anyone there. Failing this it's the Search New Posts option and if I've got something to say I'll start a new thread (using the search option first of course. ;) )
Sometimes I go and sit in the chat room if it's empty because alot of people won't go in if there's nobody there and nobody likes to be the first one in. Once it shows that a couple of people are in it's surprising how fast it fills up. ;)
I think I'm spending far too much time online.
SpiderPete 29-08-2005, 13:24 Right I am bored now , I am going to dig up old posts :D
First thing I do is check out the "New posts" first, and then go to my "subscribed threads" and have a quick look to see who is in the chat room, although I cannot stop in for long, my browser wont let me.
Then I go on search to make sure I dont post something already doen or people will pounce on me and tell me off :P
So how many "Subscribed threads" do you have ?
I have 15 at the moment.
smelley_cat1 29-08-2005, 14:21 i always go to entertainment first - its where most of my threads and posts are!

Views tells you how many times that thread has been looked at.
"Ask an Expert" was a section of the site where people could ask questions for other users to answer. We don't have it any more as it was replaced with the computer section.

We used to have a section called 'Ask an Expert' which covered all sorts of topics such as gardening, DIY, computer stuff etc. It got merged into General Chat about four months ago.

But the computing questions were clumped together in a new section 'Computer and Network Help' or something like that.
melthebell 29-08-2005, 21:51 i scroll down to the comouter section, then general, then sheffield, then the ex pats / history, normally miss the rest unless im really bored :P
im already in about 5 forums and 4 irc channels a night
DragonofAna 29-08-2005, 22:14 I look for anything posted by Cyclone so I can have a big argument with him. Only kidding.
I look at General chat and see if there is anything of interest there. Usually find something to stick my two pennyworth in.
Sorry cyclone ;)
