Does anyone remember this shop? My dad lived there for a few years around 1920's - his initials are carved somewhere on the stone slab near the backs of the houses.
I can remember going there in the early 50's and we caught the trams from Rotherham to Sheffield and then up to 'Tinker Lane'???
Would appreciate any help, from Kelly's, photos, personal memories etc. Shopowners name would be Annie Green then Dolly Robbins.
Cheers

Thank you so much to Lilly and Hutch - great news to see your replies.
Am new to the forum and so I am quite overwhelmed by how helpful you have been.
Also used some useful info from thread about 'Old Sheffield Maps' and am off to Waterstones to buy the 1890's map to try to find my Grandad and Great Grandad's houses. Very new to this ancestry business and consequently when I spot something I think is 'family' am leapin' about shouting 'these are my people' (sad or what??)

Thanks again guys and gals....will keep on looking for replies and information.

Wondered if anyone knew anything about researching army records or East India Company records. My dad was born in Poona, India and was christened in Calcutta. My Grandad in Black Watch regiment. But it says on Dad's birth cert. his dad was a miner?? he brought his family home on a ship which sank..... in about 1915-1917 and my gran caught pneumonia cos she in sea for too long, died few weeks later. Dad survived (18 months old) by sailors cutting hole in top of rum barrel lid (cork) and slotting him in. Survivors went to live at Broomspring lane Sheff. and Dad, 2 brothers and sister went to Springfield School. (Brilliant place now.....victorian classroom there etc...) Grandad returned to regiment (or signed up....and went to war) Dad and family subsequently went to Dollies shop at Bolehill Road.
Cant find any evidence of births or deaths..cos dont know years or places. Wondered why Grandad went to India....probably to work...and why the Black Watch regiment? when his family came from Sheffield (I think) dont know where to start. Found a Robbins family in 1881 census which fits grandad (aged 5) but nothing else .. suggestions welcome. Sorry not online all time but do access Forum each morning and nite for interesting threads and news.

To add to the directory info:
White's 1919/20
298 Bolehill Road
George Stacey shopkeeper

I don't think you've told us the names of these people you are looking for (apart from Annie Green or Dolly Robbibs ?!). It would be useful to know the names when checking our own resources.

If the older generation were buried from the house on Bole Hill Road, they may very well be in Walkley Cemetery (100 yards down Waller Road). I am a member of the Friends of the Cemetery and I do a lot of work with the plans and gravestones so I could keep an eye open for the relevant names.

Thanks to Hugh W
Annie Robbins (think born 1867 Warwick - on 1880 census lived on Broomspring Lane Hse. 3, Ct. 12 - ( she My Great Aunt )- Married John Henry Green - in 1893 - owned shop at 298 Bolehill Rd

Her brother - my Grandfather - Harry George Robbins - born 1878 ish - dont know where - bmd index says Poona India but I think its wrong! came back from India 1915/16 ish with wife and 4 children (my aunts and uncles) wife died soon after...think his children lived on Broomspring Lane for a short while (they certainly went to Springfield School ) and then moved to 298 because foster parent ill treated them, Grandad Harry George returned to India - Black Watch Regiment (have photo of him in kilt with 2 eldest children)

Dolly Robbins - shop owner after Annie Green nee Robbins - was some sort of cousin to Harry George Robbins.

Harry George Robbins was nightwatchman for WHSmith after ww1 ended - died sometime around early 1940s.
Need to enrol at archives dept. I think.... although my info is so sketchy I'm not sure when/where to start. Have Dad's birth cert. from Calcutta (know Harry George and wife Christina Sophia Blake were married in India around 19004 - but I still dont think Harry George born there - think its been posted wrongly..
Think Dolly Robbins was daughter of Frank Robbins - maybe cousin of Harry George. No idea who her mother was.. He later married Gertie ??
and they lived in Almshouses at Hunters Bar. She died around 1952. Fraid thats all I know.
Your work with cemetery sounds interesting - and must be rewarding.

Kelly's Directory for 1957 lists a Miss Annie Robbins, Shopkeeper.

I hope this helps.
