This walk starts at Tideswell church at 10.30 Sunday 17th Feb, is a 6 mile circular walk, and will take us past reminders of the Industrial Revolution, hence the name Ghosts of Millers Dale.
Along the way we will pass Litton Mill and Cressbrook Mill in Millers Dale where cotton mills were built in the 18th century, before climbing up towards Litton village to enjoy stunning views of Tansley Dale.
With all the different sights on view this day, I think it'll be a gentle stroll with lots of stops this one, and will be especially suitable for any newbies who might want to come for the first time.
The no 65 bus leaves Sheffield at 9.30 and takes about an hour to get to Tideswell, with a return bus available at 3.30pm.
Is everybody up for this one?

Cookman and I should be up for this one. Lets hope for as beautiful a day as this past weekend.
Does anyone know if there's parking around the church? Persumabley we can't park at the church with it being Sunday and all.
Can I just double check it's the church on Pursglove Dr? Wouldn't want to wait at the wrong church. . .like the train station mix up!

It's someone very happy birthday on this day as well! Although she's not yet said she's coming, but I shall practice my singing voice in case she does!

It's a year or two since I was last at Tideswell, but I think there's street parking, and if not there's a car park 5 mins walk away on the way out of Tideswell, in the direction that we'll be walking. This is at the start of Millers Dale.
Regarding the church, you can't miss it, it's huuuuuge. It's known as the cathedral of the Peaks in fact.
If you want some advice, get there early. You can always have a look at the church!

There is parking close to the church for about 8-9 cars i would say but it is usually busy at weekend's but not midweek, the road through Tideswell which takes you past the church normally has space to park along it, i have used this regularly....oh and i don't want to tempt fate but wheel clamper's haven't reached Tideswell...........yet.;)

And as for the church as scoobz says it is massive (at least compared to the rest of the place), nice place for a white wedding.........oop's couldn't resist.

Hello all! Having bought a one-way ticket to Cornwall, I don't seem to be able to get one back for less than £110! However, I will endeavour to be there for this one if I can get a passage.

Yey! I'm back! Mind you, it still cost an arm and a leg and it seemed we had to go Truro to Sheffield via Dundee!

Thanks to Scoobz for the advice about planes........don't you know about me and flying???....and to Galloway...methinks sticking anything out on the motorway would just get me arrested! :o

Did some absolutely stunning walks in glorious weather and was very sad to leave. Can we meet in Padstow next Sunday?

Will be at Tideswell on Sunday morning-anyone want a lift from south Sheffield?

I love Padstow, went for the day while we were in Cornwall last summer but it was so busy, walked up the hill and just sat and looked out at water, fantastic views.

Hope I don't speak too soon here, but the weather forecast is for sunshine all day Sunday, so anybody who's thinking about coming just get yourselves down to Tideswell for 10.30 cos you never know what the weather might be like for the next one!

Well we didn't see anything spooky today, but our spirits were certainly raised in the beautiful sunshine and scenery we enjoyed in this stunning part of the world.
What a difficult walk it was though, thanks to the ice and mud!
After several slips and slides, thankfully we all returned intact, but knew we'd done a difficult but rewarding walk despite it apparently only being 6 miles in total.
Great pub stop at the village of Litton near the end of the walk, it was so nice to be able to sit outside in the sunshine at a place which brings back happy memories for me. I could have stayed there all day.
Todays roll-call..........Sherwood, Neoteric, Neily, Parkwoman, Fuzzle, Louise, Scoobz, Inkie, Mr Inkie, Inkie minor, Inkie major, Rob, Billysmum, Nooka, Whitemutt, Cookman, Canada Girl. Which I think makes 17 in total.

Well we didn't see anything spooky today

That was a great walk - so beautiful and the contrast between the cold and the warmth was very marked.

Seemed to have picked up a few spooky things on my camera - see the last shot is there something in that cave? - plus a tree with spectacles growing on it, and a mossy woollen hat, plus a little white dog pointing out the route. But the spookiest thing is I saw someone eating a chocolate bar for hours and it never seemed to get any smaller ........ that's realy spooky.

Hope you enjoy my pics here (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/GhostsOfMillersDaleWalk17thFebruary2008)

Neo your photos are fantastic, some are really eerie. You captured the day perfectly.:)

Todays walk felt longer than 6 miles, must have been the hills and valleys that did it. But werent the views up there worth it! It was lovely to sit and warm up in the sun too, after such a frosty cold start to the day. The hearty veg soup at the cafe in the folly was very satisfying and well worth £1.40! :P

Some lovely photos there Neo i really like the one of the misty river, the one after the walkers sign, youve captured the atmosphere really well in it. :D

Not sure how well im going to do next week if i am this tired after only 6 miles! Will have to see!

Today's walk looks like it was a really memorable one-the views and lighting, with the combination of frost and sunshine is stunning-and thanks to Neo for showing me what I missed!

Matters were somewhat taken out of my hands this morning as, whilst contemplating getting up, I managed to badly strain my upper back :( -I've no idea what I did, but there was no way I could have driven! Its much better now, and we did manage to get out for a bit of a walk to Whirlow, where there were dozens of new lambs cavorting around. Very early!

Like Linchpin Lulu i am also looking wistfully at what I missed. i had to pull out at the last moment due to a family (child) crisis! ended up painting the bedroom ceiling instead but I did manage to get a long walk in around Rother Valley - dogs were pleased. Glad you had a good day it looks wonderful. Hope to see you Saturday but if I come I will only be able to do one way as I have to be back for lunchtime.

An absolutely brilliant day out! Cookman was in bed by 8pm - those hills really wore him out!
Just in the process of downloading my photos. If any of you 'techies' out there can help me with this. . . I just download my photos right on to my desktop but from there I have an awful time getting them onto picassa and have to do it 5 photos as a time and it takes AGES! Anyone know how to get around this?

Yes, a lovely walk and wonderful weather. Can we do it again in the summer, when it's not muddy?

Many thanks to Scoobz for giving me a helping hand on the slippery slopes, although he came nearer to falling than I did - I'm sure that one-legged position must have a name in ballet. :hihi:

Great pics from Neo & CanadaGirl.
