just been thinking about what milk to start my newborn baby on when he arrives .
my two other kids when straight on cow and gate and was fine , but they say it not that good for the little ones anymore as it can cause tummy upset due to the new ingredients they put in it .
so just wondering what other milk do you new mums use .

my sisters little one is on cow and gate and has no problems what so ever. I guess like anything it agrees with some and not with others.

I think it's a matter of personal opinion.

I intend to breastfeed but i have bought in a tub of cow and gate premium just in case.

Mr little uns on cow and gate and he is quite a sicky baby anyway. But we put him on the comfort for a while and now hes 8 months+ hes on stage three normal. We haven't really had any problems with cow and gate.

Who told you that? There's nothing wrong with C&G! They would certainly not be allowed to sell a brand of milk if it wasn't safe! ;)

I understand C&G is the same formula as Aptamil anyway, but with a different brand name.

We use the C&G Comfort which is thickened, it helped with bad colic, and we've stayed with it since. Be warned though, because of it being thickened in order to digest better and bring out wind t'other way, the baby produces horrific farts and really, really smelly poo. :hihi:

my little one had sma gold for 10 days while i was in hospital.
she was a sicky baby with breastmilk so we expected her to be sicky still and she was. didn't know about the poo difference cos other half had to change all the nappies :hihi:

she went back on the boobie juice when i came home and is still on it now :)

I've been told that as well. My Mom used to be a nurse on the special care unit and told me that they considered Aptimil to be the closest to breast milk. I was also given the choice of Aptilmil or SMA when I was in hospital. So I consider either of these to be good choices.

I'm using aptamil, he seems to love it so far, little piggy :)

The midwives on the ward advised me that they think it is the best if you can't/don't want to breastfeed.

Cow & Gate and Milupa(Aptamil) are manufactured by the Numico group who I think might be owned by Danone.
A lot of mums reckon C&G is pretty heavy on their babies stomach whereas Aptamil is lighter and easier to digest.
A quick search however shows as many mums complaining about Aptamil as do any of the other brands so its just down to trial and error as to whether your baby will be suited to a certain brand.
Its strange how they are marketed in such different ways though, specially as to whether they can be refridgerated and stored. Aptamil says they can but C&G says they cannot and there seems to be some debate about storing made up formula after it is mixed because of bacterial growth. Sounds like some new age trendy nonsense to me though.

We used Farleys after breast feeding and in addition to during the transfer period. We also used stage 1 milk right up until we put them on cows milk. Our HV was an slightly hippy but lovely woman and said that Farleys had a good recipe which had a better balance of the elements which make up the major differences between cows and humans milk, casein. Humans have much less and find cows milk much harder to digest because it has very high levels of casein. http://www.saanendoah.com/compare.html
So, we occasionally used stage 2 overnight night (just to get some sleep) but otherwise the first milk did them throughout - part of the thing with the heavier milks is the baby can end up too heavy (this is not the norm but it does happen) and we were keen to keep them well fed but lithe and they are.
Stage 2 and 3 milks are normally not necessary for any child, very few actually NEED it, it's sold as a marketing tool to make you THINK that's what they need.
I would certainly give them first stage milk and not bother with all the others, but otherwise take some time to read the labels and research a little to see what you feel is best.

I used SMA Gold after breast feeding for 3 months. She was on this until she turned 1 last week, she is now on cows milk and has rediscovered how much she loves milk! Never bothered moving onto the different ones as she was satisfied with the Gold.

I used Aptimil because that was what they gave him at Jessops, and what was good enough for them was good enough for me.

I was a rare mixed-feeder (baby had both formula and breast milk quite happily) and found he had no problem moving from breast to Aptimil and back.

Like Zebra, I would warn against spending money unnecessarily on Follow On milks later. There is no reason for it. They will do fine going straight to milk at 1 year.

I think a lot of the confusion about when to make up milk and how to store it etc is there partly to cover the backs of the manufacturers. If you're sensible, i.e. use up milk within about 18 hours and whizz a bottle once it's been open an hour, and of course you are scrupulous in keeping bottles and kit clean, you will be OK. There's always going to be someone who does things wrong however, so the manufacturers must follow the line of greatest caution.

Imagine if you had to wash, sterilise and wait for boiled water to cool each time! It would be a nightmare! :o

We just do the bottles with boiled water in them then add enough boiling water to make it warm and add the powder when feed time comes. That way we don't throw any away :)
