View Full Version : Litter in Sheffield
MARTINO 1 18-09-2003, 16:39 Any body else sick of all the litter that is all around sheffield i cannot remember the last time i saw a road sweeper around the longley estate it is fast becoming a tip think we should all bombard our council with letters of complaint and see if we get any results.
On a Sunday and Monday mornings the litter at the bottom of London road is terrible. I am not sure who cleans this up but I do think these fast food places should be made accountable for it.

Why? Was it the council who put the litter there?
They have lots of cleaners in the city centre...
I walked along the canal from town to Meadowhall the other day and was appalled by the amount of litter along the way.
However, there are stretches where the overhead lines prevent people fishing and there was suprisingly little litter in these places. Is this a coincidence? Do fishermen make such large catches that they have to empty everything out to carry the fish home?

I think this is a coincidence. what did the litter consist of? However, the canal is split up in sections. Different people are responsible for different stretches. You could perhaps contact whom is responsible for that particular stretch and make your views known if you think anglers are causing this problem.

No but the council are responsible for keeping the area clean. We pay our council tax and Longley should be as clean as Dore.
However, litter louts if caught should be prosicuted and i,m afraid to say that all council estates are the same as some of the people that live in them have no respect for there area.
now if you go up to Dore, Fulwood or any Halam area its always cleaner, and its not because the road sweepers look after the more privlaged of us, its because the people living there have more respect for were they live.
You only have to look at peoples gardens in those areas they are tidier and pleasantly groomed and in council areas you can hardley walk on the path due to privy taking it all up due to not been cut for years.
The binmen in Longley are also disrespectfull as i see them drop rubbish out of the bins and don't bother picking it up which is a big contributer to our litter problem.
I always pick up litter outside my house and bin it but with the minority living like animals well its impossible to keep our area being litter free.
alchresearch 19-09-2003, 11:42 I thought Sheffield was just having an international festival of litter.
The positive effects of The Life of Grime seem to have worn off - we are going back to being one big dump again. But then it's not just the council's fault - they are not the ones who take the plastic off their fags and chuck it on the floor, or the people who ruined the pavements on Devonshire Street (check out all those black gum marks in less than a year!).

I see a lot of adults in the city centre dropping litter when there's a bin just two metres away. I'd expect more sense from them...

Nah, the scum that drop it should be. Too idle to take their mess to a bin, they just drop it on to the floor, expecting someone else to clear up after them. These people should not only receive on the spot fines, but also, be made to spend the next couple of hours, under supervision, picking up as much litter as they can.

Well, I'd be happy with your alternative also. It's just that these people are long gone and the litter still remains.
