Right, well, darwin lane is a thin road with two schools on it (tapton and King Edwards) adn both schools have sent out letters (no use-kids lose em) asking parents not to drop their kids off on darwin. but does that stop them?? NO so they sent out another letter saying that there will be a bobby there every morning fining people parking there (fair enough) but if you have a dissabled child you may go into the car park. DID THAT STOP THEM??? NO

so as a student of Tapton School im asking anyone who does do the above to STOP IT!!! :( because yesterday i was within feet of being killed :!: because some silly b*gger had parked on darwin blocking my view up th road

For the safty of kids and parents pls stop it. if your that desperate drop them off at the top of Darwin Lane

It's a problem all over the whole city. Many parents can't be bothered to take the time to walk their children to school, or have heard too many scare stories to let children old enough to walk with their friends. It's dangerous and short-sighted to take children to school in a car unless you have a very good reason - child with disability, school way too far away and child too young to take bus, are the only two reasons that come to mind immediately (tho I'm sure people will tell me many more).
Children will continue to be at very high risk of a car accident right outside their schools until people start to get responsible.
I see children every day being picked up and driven one or two streets over to home. It's madness.

Rant over...:?

true but pupils at tapton are aged between 11 and 20 and crosspool is a well known area for the lowest crime rate i think

and even if the parents are scared there ae a good 3000 other people going down that Lane at the same time so every1 can see everyone else so its safe, unless your like 30mins l8

I'm agreeing with you:lol:

Maybe if young people themselves started up a campaign, parents would listen.

You could start one, Fletch

Fellow Sheffielders,

Here's yet another heart-warming story in today's Sheffield Star

http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=660665

A car dropping off a child reverses onto the pavement and nearly splats a young child, at Firshill School.

At the Firshill / Barnsley / Scott Road junction, traffic doesn't go fast enough at rush hour times to justify driving a child to or from school. The junction also has a pelican crossing, bus stops and those speed bumps that I love to see outside schools.

Why do parents still drive their children to that school?

Psychiatrists and Social commentators, give me your answers please:

Is it because parents want to show off their car?

Is it because domesticated housewives want to show that they can drive and just aren't chained to the kitchen sink?

Is it because they don't mind splatting someones elses child?

Can't they put bollard in the middle of the lane so no access is possible?

I can understand fire engines as such needs access, so my question is what is the lane used for other than dropping kids off?

Isn't there another way in?

It is called a lane but is a main way through from Sandygate Rd/Crosspool to Manchester Rd, and then down to Brocco Bank.

I know as i work at one of the schools and it is bad in a mornin, it's is amazin how many parents i get miffed with about this, and make it known, but the heads and police will do nothing about it. Does a child have to be killed before anything happens about this.

There are visually impaired kids at Tapton, and no grip left on the road from where they did the building work, it's dark with all the trees (and will get worse as the year goes on), and kids milling around in worlds of there own, does not help when someone suddenly decides to stop in front of you to drop off there little darling.

There is a pull in near the top of the road (ex bus stop) where they can stop without being in anyones way, and a turning point built when the schools were that is closed off??? but it means there child has to walk 100-200yrds to get to school, and it is obviously far too much for them.

Lydgate, on Manchester Rd is bad too and that has double yellow lines outside it.

DOUBLE YELLOWS MEAN NO PARKING or they did when i passed my test, when will some of these pain in the arse peolpe realise this?

Sorry rant over but well pi**ed off with it everyday.

It also doesn't help that staff that come in later have to park out on the roads (but not allowed on Darwin Lane) as the new built schools carparks are not big enough, now that is stupid.

It's because they're bone idle and scared of getting wet if it rains.

Is it me being too uptight or does anyone else get upset about people parking on the Zig Zag lines at schools when dropping off/picking up kids from school.
This does not happen at all schools but on my run to work i have noticed that it seems to be a problem at both Hillsboro' and Wisewood Schools. I even spotted a Main Line Bus parked outside Wisewood on the lines one morning.
Not only is it lazy it's dangerous too.

The sad thing about people who park on these lines is that there the ones that have to bring their kids to school because "it's to dangerous" for them to walk there. So they increase the danger for everybody elses kids by parking like inconsiderate idiots. The best thing any school can do when confronted with this is talk directly to the wallies doing it, if that fails put the reg no in the school bulletin/newsletter and name and shame.
By the way this is an endorsable offence.

Parking on zig-zags also gets you 3 points on your licence - I bet not many people knew that!

Ah, the school run - one of my pet hates! Yes, this happens at our local school all the time as well and it really annoys me too. I suppose I shouldn't get too up tight about it really as most of them only park there for a couple of minutes or so, but they are there for a very good reason. Our local school also has a bus stop close to the zig zags and it annoys me just as much when they park there too. Only yesterday a couple of parents were casually parked in the bus stop when along comes a bus so what happens - it has to stop in the middle of the road holding up all the other traffic as well.

I think most people are just too lazy and selfish to think about what they are doing. Ok, not everyone's circumstances allow them to walk the kids to school but if they do drive, why can't they just spend a couple of minutes extra by parking up the road somewhere sensible then walking the kids the last few hundred yards to school. Surely people aren't that short of time in the morning are they?

I hate the drivers at my sons school. At one side it is fairly clear but the other side is built up area of terraced houses and these pratts drive round as if they have right to the flippin street.

There is no reaon why they cannot get off their arse and walk, or even park a few streets away and walk up to the gates. It is just laziness.

I think cars should be banned around the school areas unless they are resident or have obtained a permit. It is stupid

as a regular school runner i sometimes watch in amazed at the sheer stupidity at some of the drivers antics.
but without doubt the most idiotic are those that stop in the middle of the road and have a full scale conversation with a friend.

a woman caused a ten car backlog this morning (sorry nine and a bus) and was quite indignant when asked politely if she could move on.

oh and by the way ,those nice boulders that people paint white to stop you parking outside their house, look lovely (usually around schools too) but according to the council,if you park by them and damage your car door opening it,the person responsible for placing them there is liable for the damage to your vehicle.

Think there is another post on this by Fletch, i will have a look.
But yep they are dead annoying, i beep at them when they pull up in front of me. And when will people realise that a double yellow line MEANS NO PARKING, as outside Lydgate school on Manchester Rd.
They do it on Darwin Lane, which is steep and has no grip (not been resurfaced for years and building work made it worse), how any one could stop in an emergency anyway on there, and these people just park in the way.
Mind you 2 good uns recently on Darwin Lane, and not parents. The lady that called her dog across the road in front of me, and then had the cheek to swear at me. The other the lady on the morning of the new mobile phone law who just stopped to answer her phone, didn't pull over just stopped in the middle of the road. :loopy:
There is a turning cirle at the top of the road, which was built for the buses but is too small and now blocked off by large concrete block could be opened up and they could use that to drop off there darlings without any hassle.
I keep asking the headmaster at our school to bring in a nice policeman to fine anyone stopping to drop off kids, but he's not that harsh, same as he won't stop them coming into car park to drop them off risking knocking down the blind kids and "normal" kids.
Anyone fancy complaining to police, soon put down council tax the amount they would raise fining them.
