I shall be doing the BUPA 10k run in September, also the BUPA 10k Manchester run on 18 May.
Savannah2 08-02-2008, 17:47 Just curious, does Sheffield still have the marathon and half marathon?
Just curious, does Sheffield still have the marathon and half marathon?
Yup, i think so :)
Hope it's ok to jump on this thread, might as well!
I'm running the Paris half marathon on March 2nd (eek!) and I'm trying to raise money for a brain and spinal injury clinic called basic. It's based in Manchester and they took good care of my friend and her nearest and dearest when she sadly passed away following a brain haemmorhage in Nov 2006.
If anyone would like to sponsor me, you can do here (http://www.justgiving.com/leonsnell)
Many thanks :)
Savannah2 08-02-2008, 18:14 Yup, i think so :)
Thanks. I have found details of the half marathon (http://www.sheffieldmarathon.com/content.php?nPageID=1), can't find any details regarding the full marathon.
S8 Blade 09-02-2008, 17:44 I have to say - I'm not doing Race for Life this year. I did it for the first time two years ago and loved it, and raised over £500. I was so excited to do it last year, but wasn't half as enthusiastic - there are so many others taking part it's almost impossible to get sponsors. It's ok saying "it's the taking part that counts", but with this, it's the money raised that counts and I don't see the point in me taking part if I'm not raising money - so I'm going to give it a miss and let others be sponsored and raise the money.
Our lass might be doing it again. If not, I shall take her place - I might look good with a bit of make-up on :P
daveblade 09-02-2008, 20:06 good look and good on you to all the people taking part.
Skippy06 09-02-2008, 20:57 Hi
Just thinking about doing this as someone I worked with died last year on my birthday and a friend's dad is suffering at the moment.
As I am not the fittest person in the world can anyone give any real advice re how much training and what is the course.
Going to do it I think even if I walk the 5k.

my sisters walking it as she isn`t into running. So I don`t think you`ll be on your own.
Think of the sense of pride when you`ve done it!

Hi Skippy,
My housemate and I started running last August (!) with a view to running the half marathon in Sheffield this April, and we started off with the guides to running 5k and 10k that you can find on the BUPA website here (http://http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_information/asp/healthy_living/lifestyle/exercise/running/beginner/index.asp)http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_information/asp/healthy_living/lifestyle/exercise/running/beginner/index.asp
I found it really helpful - it starts off for the absolute beginner, but there is also a 10k programme and an half marathon if you want to take it further.
Good luck!
I'm doing the 10.30 one. Does anyone know if we are following a route or do we just do laps of the don valley track? Do people come and watch?
I will be mostly walking but want to at least run the last bit!

Yeah there is a route but i'm not sure what it is, just follow the rest of the other runners and you'll soon find your way back :hihi: There was hundreds of people there watching last year.

My daughter and I are doing our 3rd Race for Life, this time with my g/f aswell, the 2pm at Don Valley.
You can walk the whole thing if that's what suits you, there are old people, wheelchairs, pushchairs, little kids, unfit people (MEEE!) All the sprinters set off first and the slower crowd follow at their own pace.
The atmosphere is incredible, which makes up for the less than scenic route past some dodgy shops round Attercliffe, and you will definately cry at some point in the day!
Take water for the journey round, as even if you aren't running you will still get thirsty. The 'Race' starts and ends on the stadium track, and every 1k is marked with a sign so you know how far you've still got to go. People cheer you on at certain points round the course, and it's an amazing day out!
blondie-blue 22-03-2008, 08:07 I'm doing the Race for life but i'm doing the 10.30am race with 2 of my gf's.... :)
I will be there at 2 with a face resembling a tomato once I've done. Hope it won't be too hot!
Word of advice....
don't line up at the front unless you want to run, there's nothing more demoralising than having loads of 'proper' runners whizz past you.
Try and get near the back, it's then great trotting past those who aren't running.
We didn't run much last year, pretty much power walked all the way round and did it in 50mins.
Atmosphere is brilliant.:D

I have no idea what the route will be. What time are you doing?
Not a clue about time, i managed a 10k once in 80 mins but no idea how to figure out a time for 5k. At the moment i can only run for about 5 mins without a walk break :(
honeyb35 22-04-2009, 13:01 When is it this year? is it too late to enter?
50's chick 22-04-2009, 14:06 i'm doing the 2pm race if anyone fancies running with me pm me. . .
i don't run very fast but this will be my 5th year though never before in sheffield. i actually lost weight (7st) to take part in my first race after my aunt died of breast and bone marrow cancer at 45, and last year i ran for all my fellow 'inmates' on the oncology ward of charring cross hospital after recovering from cervical cancer myself.
good luck to everyone else who's taking part m x
