View Full Version : Premiership to play games overseas???
BasilRathbon 07-02-2008, 14:56 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7232390.stm
No, it's not an April Fool. Having spent years moaning about how playing as many as 2 games of football a week is too much and reducing the number of games in a season from 42 to 38, the Premiership clubs now want to play more games, but in other countries.
Now you can understand minority sports that have little status outside of one country doing this, but surely every country in the world has its own football league and this is just a ridiculous gimmick for obvious financial reasons and to improve each club's "global brand"?
"And now, live from Tokyo, it's Derby County vs Fulham" - ridiculous or what?
greed- this is simple greed and its also paving the way for a world 'superleague'
bladesufc1 07-02-2008, 15:09 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7232390.stm
mor money for the premiership teams :D
UrbanCaveman 07-02-2008, 15:11 already done :P

pathetic in my eyes- money money money!!!!
What struck me was that the proposal was that there was going to be one round of fixtures, and that they were to be bid for by other countries. So Derby vs Fulham wouldn't come from Tokyo, they'd play in Libya or somewhere while Arsenal vs Chelsea was played in USA or Beijing. Maybe Greenland will put in a bid.
This from the very people who complain that England shouldn't play so many matches because "our players are too tired."
You don't seriously believe that this will concern Sheffield teams in the near future, do you? :D
briggy1967 07-02-2008, 16:56 Its a ridiculous idea dreamed up by people who have no idea how the genuine football fan feels, this is ALL about money, fair enough there are many ex-pats in Australia and America who would love to see Prem teams over there and the Asian Countries will go crazy about the thought of watching a Prem Game Live.
But what about the English Fans, the bread and butter of any team,it isnt right to expect them to spend a fortune to watch their team play in a foreign country.
Are we gonna get Juventus playing Milan over here next.............NO!!!
already done :P

They're not supposed to go watch them play in a foreign country. These fixtures will be for people who live out there to watch.
Grandad.Malky 07-02-2008, 17:38 You couldn’t make it up, the p/league was reduced in size because the top clubs moaned about to many fixtures now they are talking about more fixtures and more travel.

The clubs only moan about too many fixtures when they aren't getting the money from them. That's why they go ballistic over the African Cup of Nations, and England friendlies, causing damage and wear/tear on their players. If they could get twice as big a Sky contract for playing 70 games a season, they would.

The goal for the top teams is European football, the league cup has suffered for years and now the FA cup is starting to suffer, the big clubs don’t want to be playing Derby, Reading or Wigan all of which they get paid for.
If they start playing games all over the world one of two things will happen, the premier league will get smaller to accommodate fixture backlogs or the top 2 or 3 will break away all together to join a super league.

Oh well thats o.k then innit,a season ticket holder who has travelled all over England watching his team gets to miss out on a game that could potentially have a bearing on whether they win the prem, qualify for Europe and get relegated.ex pats
If the foreign fans want to see "their" team play then they should come to England, not bring the mountain to mohamed!!!
Prob just trying to make it a bit more exciting (as well as the dosh factor).

That'd be Dave Richards.

I'm not saying it's a good idea. I hate it. But that's the thinking behind it; they don't expect regular supporters to go, in fact it would defeat the whole objective if they did.

Spot on pal. I know some people who haven't missed any of their team's home games since they started going as kids - so now to keep it going they'll have to fork out more than the cost of a season ticket to watch one game half way round the world.
Why don't they just go the whole hog and move the whole bang shoot to Japan, Malaysia, China etc.
Mao Utd anybody??

....which won't BE a home game...
Yet another decision by moneymen rather than football men.

If the fans do not like what their clubs are doing don`t buy the tickets.Simple.They would soon come round to the fans way of thinking then.
Greed that is what it's about Scudamore & his cronies, he does not care about our national sport it's about money.

I don’t think the top clubs need their fans anymore they make far more money of the field than through season tickets.
If the real fans made a stance and stopped buying season tickets the clubs know there is plenty of glory hunting prawn sandwich eaters waiting to take their place.

yes of course, but the money will still back to the uk and back in to the football clubs, more foreign tv channels will want to carry the premier league, which in turn will come back in the UK so whats the problem????
Read what Oliver Holt say's in the Daily Mirror he say's it all.

but that would mean buying a daily mirror?
Agent Gypo 08-02-2008, 14:47 The proposal is ludicrous, and the sole purpose serves only as a marketing exercise.
How is it fair that some teams will have to face Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea three times? And you can bet that the bigger clubs are going to want to introduce some rule that keeps them from playing against each other.
Clubs are free to arrange games abroad as part of their pre-season. Indeed, some of them do already. Chelsea have recently played in the US, there's the Amsterdam tournament and so on.
What baffles me more though is that it is clear the one thing players seem to be hankering after is a winter break. The money men have responded with the notion of playing more games to fill their coffers. Obscene.
All this will do is make the Premier League elite stronger, and ultimately the league will become more predictable.

Apparantley its already been decided that the top 6 teams wont be playing each other, they will be playing teams in mid-table and the other mid table teams will be playing teams fighting relegation.
Will be interesting to see if Man Utd,Chelsea,Arsenal and Liverpool still think its a good idea should they lose and it costs them the title or a champions league place
Asia, the biggest single market for this idea, have effectively ruled it out. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7239788.stm) And the USA have already voiced some very serious doubts.
Looks like they won't be able to sell the games anyway, unless they're happy with Arsenal vs. Tottenham in front of six camels and a goat in Ouagadougou.

Wonder what the gate would be for Blackburn v Birmingham.....
If the Sheffield teams get there act together can just see a All Yorkshire match going down a treat at the nou camp :)

Why would they want to take sand to the Arabs or coal to Newcastle?
The idea of taking the game abroad would be to promote it in countries where the game is still evolving.

yeah maybe but would be fun

The idea isnt to promote the game in countries where the game is still evolving, its to make more money for the F.A Fat Cats
They are planning to play games in:
Australia (will never catch on because the ball is the wrong shape, the only reason the want to go to Australia with it is because its fulll of ex-pats)
Asia (have had the J.League for years and thrown millions into it but it still hasnt worked because the asians have become hooked on English football due to English teams buying Asian players just for their marketing value, name me 1 decent Asain player!!!)
America (have had the major Soccer league for years, even had the World Cup ffs and FOOTBALL!!! still hasnt really caught on and never will, its too boring for them)
If the plan was to take prem football to countries where the game is still evolving then they would be going to the African countries but they arent because it isnt going to make them any money because the African people dont have the money.

I wasn’t condoning the idea at all I was just pointing out that they wouldn’t be taking the game to Spain they would be taking it to some of the” football backwaters” does that include Sheffield. :D

I don’t know about Australia but the standard of the game as got to evolve / grow in Asia and America to reach European levels and as you have said the marketing value is immense .
I think everyone has hit the nail on the head here.
It's about greed, nothing else. ££££££££££
Thankfully, FIFA have lowered the boom on this one.
Sepp Blatter has announced that it will "never happen" and that any further attempts to promote the idea will seriously damage England's chances of hosting the World Cup.
briggy1967 15-02-2008, 03:38 At last FIFA make a sensible decision,Scudamore out,god knows how much money he has wasted trying to get this ridiculous plan to happen
not wanted 15-02-2008, 08:37 I'm sure if a kickback was offered to a few people higher up in FIFA they would change their minds and I don't think the premier league are bothered about the world cup.
Still hopefully one of the most stupid ideas every raised in the game has gone for good.

The Premier League don't give two hoots about the world cup, though the FA if they see the bid to be damaged will have harsh words with the Premier League. Fingers crossed this will be one of those stupid plans to laugh at in twenty years time.
