1) few friendlys against mediocre teams, ie Iceland, USA probably lose last minute goals (ie in off the defenders a$se) to earn a draw

2) Play a friendly against Afganistan and thrash them 8-0 at the new Wembly, The new manager is seen as a hero

3) again play slightly rubbish team like Albania, scrape through 1-0, fans start asking questions.

4) Team such as Germany, give England a hiding.

5) Fans call for managers head

6) Manager gets sacked, and then wonder what to do next.

7) Someone suggests trying to improve grassroots level football (ie kids), that gets kicked into touch pretty quickly, who ever wins Euro 2008 gets job.

8) return to bullit point (1) and cycle starts all over again

We get to the quarters of the World Cup and lose to a very good team, but the England fans aren't happy with the manager, never stopping to think that maybe the players we have at our disposal simply are not good enough on a world stage to win a tournament that would make them the best team in the world.

The tabloid press will totally undermine his authority by entrapping him into mentioning to someone (supposedly) in private that maybe some of his squad may not enjoy training as much as some other members of his squad and that some of his players may be interested in playing for different clubs to their current employers at some point, and then claim they will forgive him if he wins the world cup.

Oh and the fans will insist on world domination for ever more.

the film "Mike Bassett - England Manager" is very appropriate to this thread

From memory it is something like Luxembourg get a draw in Italy to send England through on goal difference to the world cup...

I think we'll do ok, but it's getting tougher all the time.

All the countries that haven't had good teams in the past have started to improve radically. We've seen it in the last few major tournaments and it's going to continue with a sharp rise I think.

Thats very true. The other night I was watching the African Cup of nations on interactive and thought blimey 20 years ago

Zambia vs whoever it was would have been laughed out of the shop - what are they playing blow football?

Now everyone has to be taken seriously

The only true minnows are really small countries like andorra, luxembourg, san marino

Any country that exports players (usually to England) will see improvements
