It's the hills that nmake it sooo much hardcer, i remeber new year last year or year before, when no-one could get to new year party in morning in walkley cause sooo much ice. I still love it though. Was down south for a couple of days, and although it snowed it didn't stick so not half as much fun :) :P t020 24-02-2005, 23:56 Originally posted by robbie It is hardly Arctic conditions ... According to the Star it is (http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=954634) "... as shivering South Yorkshire was today gripped by Arctic weather conditions."  Slightly OTT.... robS35 25-02-2005, 00:35 They have really big hills out in the Alps in fact i think there called mountains, and the French, Swiss, Italians ect ect seem to be able to cope with all the snow they get out there. I know some of the big mountain roads over there are closed due to snow but there the ones way up in the high Alps. Makes the snake pass look like a little pimple. We can work wonders in the world of medicine science technology ect. This country helped build the worlds only supersonic passenger jet, but yet after a day or so of snow we cant seem to manage to keep the snake pass open. I watched the news a few weeks ago about all the snow in NYC and north eastern USA. The yanks managed to cope. So why cant we? I could understand if we only got snow every 10 years or so but we dont. Its the same every single year. We all remember the farce of i think it was last year when Sheffield city center came to a stand still. Im just waiting for the excuse of well it was the wrong type of snow. Alex C. 25-02-2005, 00:46 Would you be prepared to pay extra for the additional gritting and preparation needed for snow fall conditions? buck 25-02-2005, 03:00 I'm a resident of the North Eastern United States, and a native of Sheffield. I don't remember many years when Sheffield got a lot of snow, but maybe that's changed. Here in New England snow is a daily fact of life in the winter, and we have the equipment and know-how to deal with it. Many of our cars are four wheel drive, with the Suburu a great favorite especially in Vermont and the ski areas. We do keep our kids out of school, to prevent accidents to them in school buses, so they always lookl forward to a bit of snow. DanSumption 25-02-2005, 06:50 Years ago I was stuck for an hour on a train in London due to snow once. The train driver made an announcement, and ended it with: "and in case you're saying 'how come this never happens in Siberia?', well, they it's because they have slave labour there". foo_fighter 25-02-2005, 07:44 Originally posted by robS35 I watched the news a few weeks ago about all the snow in NYC and north eastern USA. From a different thread, but same subject: Originally posted by buck When I lived in Montreal it snowed every day for the winter, and no excuses for not getting to work on time. So I was amused down here when they closed the schools for two inches of snow. Like it never snows in New England . Gimme a break! as you'll notice, buck lives in Connecticut USA, so yes, they do encounter the same problems in NYC and NE USA. Susie 25-02-2005, 09:51 It annoys the hell out of me when people say oh well they have snow all the time in this place and that place,. The thing is in these places have these conditions a lot of the time so spend the money and time on sorting it out, we only get this weather a week or so a year, and its not worth investing the time and money into the preparations to avoid people missing work and such, so just for the sake of a couple of days disruption is it really worth complaining about it, afterall in a couple of days we'll all be back to normal Susie xx Andy C 25-02-2005, 10:06 The whole winter weather bit has been totally over-hyped in the media. Take a sober look back and how bigger impact did it have in Sheffield? OK, the schools shut, but they always have to be cautious when kids are involved. The council kept the main roads clear, the trains and trams kept running normally, most main bus routes kept running, and I'm not aware of any serious accidents. There was also none of the gridlocked traffic we have seen in previous years. So what is all this business of 'a bit of snow and life stops'. I think we all coped very well. igm1 25-02-2005, 10:45 lol King Edwards was shut but when I went to town there was barely ANY snow at all. Carl_Malibu 25-02-2005, 11:00 its about safety KES was shut because probably 50% of the students live in lodgemoor, fulwood, and pitsmoor all three areas were hit quite seriously by snow it was more about people being able to get there than the actual school being snowed in not to mention that the lower school is in crosspool, which means more snow up there too Sam Miguel 25-02-2005, 12:35 Originally posted by Susie It annoys the hell out of me when people say oh well they have snow all the time in this place and that place,. 'Britain swelters in sub tropical heatwave!' style headlines shout out from all the tabloids together with silly snippets with pictures of the sun wearing sunglasses or licking a lolly with silly tales like how a family survived for nine hours in a remote part of Derbyshire after their car broke down with only a damp dishcloth to stop them dehydrating. You know what I mean, I'm sure. algy 25-02-2005, 13:27 Originally posted by Alex C. Would you be prepared to pay extra for the additional gritting and preparation needed for snow fall conditions? You know what I mean, I'm sure. That made me chortle, because it is unfortunately no exageration. I think that it's because our weather is so, well, boring. It changes by about 40 degree centigrade over the course of the year, from not particularly cold to not particularly hot and back again. I suppose it makes the weather reporters feel better. Jamie 25-02-2005, 15:23 Can a mod please confirm, are we allowed to have more than one thread on the topic of SNOW !? My fun / humourous angle on the white fluffy stuff was pulled ... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=305201#post305201 Which led me to believe we should all use the same thread for snow topics ... and Tony did say "Mod: Please use this thread for snowy stuff" Should this thread also be merged or closed !? If not, why was mine !? (and what's so different about this one from mine, that's stopped it being closed !?). Confused. |
