View Full Version : Broadband in Woodseats / Norton....
Anyone who lives in Woodseats / Norton and similar, can't get cable broadband and who want to get broadband access via ADSL will have to pre-register with an ISP (eg Nildram/Plusnet/Pipex/etc) who will then pass on the pre-registration info to BT. When the pre-registrations get to the "trigger level", BT will enable the Woodseats exchange.
The current pre-registrations are running at 173 people out of the 250 people needed to get the exchange enabled, so come on, we only need another 77 people!!

Is it just Certain areas of Woodseats that can't get broadband then? reason I ask is because I know someone who lives in Woodeats and they have got cable braodband through Telewest.
from what my friend was telling me (he also lives in woodseats) there are small pockets which cable doesnt cover, but BT could
Michael_W 26-02-2003, 20:34 Must be certain areas because most of Woodseats is covered by cable and so broadband enabled, not sure about Norton !
A lot of Woodseats can get broadband via cable, but there are still many who are outside the cable area who are pinning their hopes on ADSL, as Telewest have no immediate plans for expansion of the cable area.
This includes myself in Norton, but also a friend of mine who lives in Woodseats, only a short way up Meadowhead from the Big Tree (apparantly he's only about 100m outside the cable area!).
The Greenhill and Meersbrook exchanges are both ADSL enabled, but there's still a shortfall of demand for the Woodseats exchange.
To check the registration levels for your particular exchange, got to bt.com (http://bt.com/broadband/) and use the box at the bottom right of the screen.
I live a bit further down the rod in Dronfield and it's like living in the thirld world.
No cable and no ADSL, although we have managed to reach the trigger for the exchange at last.
Iceheart 09-03-2003, 19:19 at least youve reached the trigger level, i live in high green, if anyone has ever been there u will know there are 2 sides to high green, one good and one not so good, people in the not so good area arent really likely to be interested in the internet and computers in general. this hasnt been taken into account when setting a trigger level, which is ridiculously high.
it needs lowering otherwise we stand no chance of getting ADSL in the area
Registrations are now up to 208 out of the 250 necessary to dsl the Woodseats exchange....
I live in Norton and have broadband through cable, so it must only be small pockets of Norton as well.
I didn't know any of Norton was cabled...but then I guess it's on a street by street basis. I've asked Telewest whether they have plans to cable our street and they said something along the lines of "we have no plans to extend our cabled area for the forseeable future".
If cable was available then I'd definitely go that way, as apparantly the service is better than ADSL anyway.
Mike,
I wouldn't hold your breath. We lived on the maisonettes on Washington Road for about 4 years. I phoned them every year and got the same reply along the lines of 'ring back in 6 months cos we're hoping to get it installed'. Wouldn't be so bad, but the road was done, just nor the maisonettes (they're obviously making so much money that they didn't need to supply a load of flats, which in turn would give them a nice healthy cashflow!)
Yeah, a mate of mine lives in the flats down near the Vine of Washington Road and he's had the same problem - the street is cabled but until they've got a big demand from a load of individual flats they're not going to bother.
I surprised they don't extend through Norton a bit more though coz it's a big residential area. I reckon another couple of months and the exchange will hit the trigger level anyway, so hopefully problem solved. It's a bit frustrating though as both the exchanges either side are enabled.
Just read that Telewest have announced at £2.2 billion loss so don't think they'll be laying lots more cable anytime soon.
but haven't they been running at a loss for quite a while? (they got rid of a load of staff lastyear IIRC)
I don't think any logic was used in the cable laying planning process! My Mum lives on City Road. The opposite side has cable, they don't!
238 / 250 people pre-registered now - almost there!!
Trigger level reached - hopefully the exchange will be upgraded over the next few months.
Are you sure you are on Woodseats Exchange? I ask because much of Woodseats is served by Sharrow Exchange, which is ADSL enabled. I couldn't find Woodseats on the registration list. Please post if you have the url.
Found the info, target reached!

Ok, final post in the saga - BT have said that the Woodseats exchange will be "ready for service" (ie available to the public) on 23rd July, 2003.
