View Full Version : How can i tell what processor i have?
I bought a laptop in December and it has a Celeron 'D' processor. Or so it says on the box?.
I have noticed that in the properties it says Celeron 'R'.
I spoke to a Numpty in Currys who shrugged his shoulders and gave me the number for a premium rate telephone line :suspect:
and then i spoke to Numpty #2 at PC world who looked at a few of their laptops and said it is the right processor but 'something':? must have gotten lost in the building of the laptops
Is there a simple way of finding out which processor i have?.
Bikertec 24-02-2005, 21:49 Vidster are you serious don't you just right click on my computer then down to properties, this shows what im running on my laptop running XP.
Sorry Bikertec. That's what i was saying when i wrote:

That's where i first noticed the discrepancy :(
Bikertec 24-02-2005, 22:12 I thought a Celeron 'R' was just a cut down version of the intel pentium with less cache.
The Celeron 'R' is the entry level processor from the Intel family.
Towards the end of last year the Celeron was given an overhall to bring it a little closer to the Pentium4. The result was the Celeron 'D'.
This is why i want to know if i have the right processor in this laptop. Although the Celeron 'R' is nowhere near as good as a P4, it is better than the standard Celeron.
If Currys have robbed me, i want to know :(.
LesMcQueen 24-02-2005, 22:20 Sandra or Aida may give you more info to go on.
You might be able to id. it more easily once you have the cache/stepping details.
Worth a try?

Download, install, amd run this (http://www.line1.co.uk/free/index.php?faction=view_entry&dldid=17) that I wrote.
Then click TOOLS, then the little arrow pointing DOWN, then select EXTRAS, then click System Information.
Voila.
BTW. the SYPC-Aid toolbar above does not build itself into windows, and includes a complete uninstaller.
The Process Explorer works a little like HijackThis (ie. it's very powerful).
Bikertec 24-02-2005, 22:52 The program is just a short cut to system properties in control panel not much help sorry.:)

I just installed sandra for the first time (nice program). It says the same as in the system properties 'Celeron 'R'' :(.
Have i stumbled upon something big here or is it a simple misunderstanding?.
sccsux:
I may try your program later
I wish i could write something like that :(
LesMcQueen 24-02-2005, 23:52 I've just checked on my system.
XP reports my CPU as an "Unknown CPU Type"
Sandra does the same.
However, AIDA32 correctly reports it as a "Mobile AMD Athlon XP-A, 2280 MHz (6 x 380)" which is pretty much bob-on.
Here's the rub. AIDA is no longer officially available.
I dont mind zipping it up and mailing it if you can't find it any where.
Let me know.

They don't know a cherfin vacuum cleaner works, let alone something with that many bits in!
(Isn't it the manufacturer ripping you off if the box has something different written on it?)
eviljock 25-02-2005, 08:53 You can download a utility from the Intel website that will tell you what exactly the processor is:-
