I've got to have one for uni on Monday. We have one which a friend left behind years ago, but don't have a mini disc player or a clue about them.

If I took it with me on Monday:
would I just be able to record straight over it?
if they need to be actually erased, would a normal recorder do this?
or should I go and spend some money on a new one?

Yes a player will erase the disk by wiping the header in about 250 milliseconds. It's not like a tape, more like a single platter of a hard disk drive. You can get free minidisks from richer sounds sometimes.

Any recordable minidisc player can erase the discs. If you are going to be using one in uni, then that will be able to erase the disc. It only takes a second to do.
