I have just put in a new black ink cartridge in my printerEpson Stylus 440 and although it is going through the motions, there is no data appearing on the page.
i have checked troubleshooter guide, checked plugs etc and done a nozzle check and on the page where it has the 2 diagrams, it only prints in colour. The black diagram is not printing.
Can anyone please advise as I am desperate to print something out.
It appears that the computer is working, the printer is physically working, but the data is not getting through to the page
Thanks

Might sound like a dumb question but have you removed the clear plastic film that protects the nozzles. Apologies if your an experienced user but it might catch someone out who has not changed one before.

Yes, and I did double check to make sure.
Thanks

Next question.
If you hold a tissue paper against the nozzles, does black ink seep into the tissue ? Also check that the gold contacts on the print head & on the print head holder are clear of any ink residue. I've had thin lines missing in printouts because of this in the past.
My printer is a Lexmark and I can do a "clean print nozzles" which forces out B&W and colour ink onto the paper in a heavy line test. Is this the same as a "nozzle check" on your printer ?

Yes, I have taken out the cartridge nad now have black ink on my hands so I know that the ink is in the cartridge.
When I do a teat page to see if it will print, it starts to make the noise as though it is printing and the heads move across the page, but there is no info there.
When I look in the print queue, it shows the document waiting to print.Cannot understand it

Your nozzles are blocked - go and buy a new printer - its cheaper!

How do you know that they are blocked, because of the ink coming out?

You still haven't confirmed if you have run a "Clean Nozzles" or "Clean Head" utility.

also .... How long has it been since it printed OK?

I have repaired a couple of dead printers, by washing out the area where the cartridge goes with some magnetic head cleaning solvent which we have crates full of at work.

I don't know for certain, but I suspect that old Ink, especially cheaper ink, leaves residue in the pipes/holes/contacts, which builds up and eventually dries solid.

If you fill up the right area with this solvent and allow it to clean out the area then dry out, when the ink has primed from the cartridge again, everything works ok.

Pm me if you want a tin of solvent.

I have run a clean hes/nozzles check and it is still not working.
It is ages since it worked as I ran out of ink and have only just got round to getting new cartridges.
The lights that light up when you are out of ink are not lit so the printer does not say that there is a problem with low ink.

Does anyone know where I can get a good printer/scanner at a good price.
Thanks for the help anyway everyone

You can get a Lexmark X1180 all in one printer scanner & copier at www.pcworld.co.uk for £50.51 inc delivery if you enter the voucher code DCBYAW at the checkout.

Or the Lexmark X1150 is available at www.ebuyer.com for £47.38 inc vat and delivery.

Lexmarks are usually slightly more expensive for cartridges though.

Hope this helps

Yeah especially as with a bit of a clean, most printers can be brought back to life and good as new, for NO money, as explained in my previous post.
One of my friends was doing a degree and I found out that she threw away 3 printers in one year.. "What a waste"

To quote the legendary Mr Ian Dury

I've got a Lexmark 1100 and it's about four years old and is still working fine and I get my colour cartridges refilled for £15
Lexmark may be cheap and cheerfull but they do seem to work!!
