View Full Version : Hallam FM news - sensationalist garbage!
Sam Miguel 24-02-2005, 16:36 Why is it that whenever something slightly unusual happens, Hallam FM manage to report it in ridiculously sensationalist way?
I usually let the news wash over me at work, but was listening out for news on school closures with the weather being rather bad today.
I couldn't help hearing things like: "South Yorkshire wakes up this morning to one of the worst snowfalls we've ever had." and "People are advised not to go out unless it is absolutely essential."
Who are they kidding? Okay, it was a snowfall, but hardly a great big whopper that blocked all the roads and cut off supplies. I left for work at 5:35 this morning, ten minutes early, and arrived ten minutes early.
Try telling your boss that! "I didn't come in yesterday because the radio said not to go out unless absolutely necessary."
What utter, utter rubbish they broadcast. It is so irresponsible.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Absolutely. It's all their fault.
BTW Hallam FM. Don't mention the teachers. I did, I think I got away with it.
christine 24-02-2005, 17:03 Mr Foster? My gosh you were in trouble this morning... Mike was loving it!
I didn't really notice....
Sam Miguel 24-02-2005, 17:07 Don't mention the teachers!
The Hallam news service aren't interested in the teachers. They are too busy concocting scarey stories about how we had 'twelve inches of snow' and how the 'big freeze' is going to set in and the new ice age and..........
help!!!

Yes sam miguel ive known a lot worse winters than this.
Do you remember the one around 74 ish.
it was a lot worse than this and we walked to work.
i remember working at george ibbersons at pitsmoor. and we walked from sheffield lane top.
Hallam Fm produces the equivelent of a 5 year old - total crap!
sorry for any spelling mistake - on my 3 pt of Stella
SHUT DOWN HALLAM FM - ITS A JOKE
Sam Miguel 24-02-2005, 17:24 You are absolutely right Tara, of course. Last night's snowfall was merely a meek little pussycat compared to the ferocious tiger ones of yesteryear.
The last time I remember a really heavy snowfall was in January 1992, and even that was nothing compared to the ones we used to get in my childhood.
No schools ever closed down, and everyone got to work - in spite of 18"snowfalls.

Personally I think it is idiotic comments such as the ones made by some radio stations that make those teachers who are really dedicated to the job wonder why they bother! Admittedly there are teachers who slack and perhaps don't truly inspire kids for every minute of their school day as you seem to have done according to your comments on another thread Toby. But isn't that the case for every profession? .. I have a friend who is a radio broadcaster but teacher by profession.. he taught, presented, went back to teaching because it was full-time then returned to presenting because it paid more money, required less hours from him and generally gave him a better life. Now I'm not saying he is a slacker because he isn't... equally I'm not saying radio presenting is easy as despite having been on the radio a couple of times I can honestly say I am not in a position or qualified to make such a judgement. As is the case for yourself with your judgements on teachers.
The reason good teachers get really irrate is because they are sick and tired of being slated by every Tom, Dick and Harry that thinks he/she knows better.

You hit the nail on the head there when you used the words 'THINKS HE/SHE KNOWS BETTER'.

...and we didn't strap our kids into cars, or make them wear safety gear whilst cycling either.
April 1978 was a bad month for snow,at my garage we cleared the forecourt & when we got to the end it had filled up with snow, about a couple of feet dropped in 24 hrs,now that was bad.

Er...what is the significance of that with regards the topic?
Well i was snowed in all day! but i do work over 50miles away and i wasnt going to dig my car out, good try to the 4x4 that tried and failed to get up my hill as well! i listened to radio sheffield this morning, and even though im only 26 i remember MUCH worse snow falls than this too!
Hallam FM is a rubbish station.
You have to remember though that different radio stations serve different purposes...if you want a serious, thorough (accurate?) wrap-up of the day's news you're not going to switch on to Hallam FM, that's what the BBC, etc are for.
There was a big debate about this in my journalism class in Sydney because one of our stations (similar to Hallam) started playing music in the background as they read the news...to the point where sometimes it was difficult to hear the announcer. Their target audience was 16-30s and I guess that's what they felt they had to do to hold their market (shock horror, there are young people that are actually INTERESTED in the news???). Maybe Hallam feel they have to spice up the news a lil to appeal to their audience or something, I dunno. After all, they're an entertainment station rather than a current affairs station.
However, in the case of yesterday's snow (LisaO, always the fencesitter) I think it was irresponsible of the station to play on people's anxieties and blow the whole thing out of proportion. I'm an Aussie who's never seen snow before, was NOT properly attired for walking outdoors in it (as I found out the hard way) and I still managed to make it into work (admittedly, after many very near face-first falls onto icy footpaths!!)
Speaking of which, is there some special snow-walking technique? How come everyone else manages to look normal as they walk on snow and I look so un-coordinated?
take small steps.
I was disappointed on returning to Sheffield yesterday to find that I didn't have to abandon my car at Park Square roundabout and make the rest of the way home using some huskies and a door modified into a sley.
In fact, there was barely any snow at all, none on the roads and really I don't see what all the fuss was about.
This 'big' snowfall we've just had would barely have been commented on a decade ago.

This is what we call Hitting the Nail on the Head. You've got to see Hallam FM as a radio equivalent of CBeebies, men in their late twenties dressed in silly costumes, pulling funny faces and generally larking about to keep the pre-schoolers entertained. That's all it is!
Imagine them dancing round the studio, or flying on imaginary spoons like in Big Cook Little Cook, only to a soundtrack of Robbie, Simply dRedful, Natasha Bedingfield and - for the youngster wid de additood - Blazing Squad.
It's no different to an episode of the Tweenies is it?
Only duller.

Nuff sed! Spot on mate.
We always used to look forward, when returning from holiday, to finding Radio Hallam on the car radio - it meant we were very close to HOME
These days we just don't bother - 5 minutes of that drivvel has the 3 of us at each other's throats:rant:

Incidentally, it's not ect, it's etc. Short for etcetera. Reading a sentence ended with 'ect ect' makes me read it like a nervous cough, sort of like 'ahem' (or 'gollum').
Not picking on you, tango2. It's probably just a typo, and it's completely off topic. I've just noticed it several times today and it grates a bit :)
