View Full Version : Hunters Bar School 1934
Round House 05-02-2008, 13:23 Now here's a long shot. Probably not relevant to most readers, but your parents...?? Going through my dad's photos (he died recently) I found a lovely class photograph. Hunters Bar School, May Day, 1934. All I know about the picture, is that the May Queen was Helen Calister, and my father (Derek Mason) is seated in the centre. Anyway, I've posted the picture on Friends Reunited Group Photos site for Hunters Bar Junior School. If anyone is on it, has a parent on it.. send me a pm with your email and will email over a higher resolution scan of the piccie. RH

Hi Brian.I would love to be there but cant. What were the names of the girls from f.c.h. and do you have any photos ? Glenda Fearnehough no 17.Hunters bar school about 1949or 1950 after Greystones:)
Hi,
I was at Hb school from about 1940 until I took the (11plus?) and then went to Nether Edge Grammar.
We had to vacate the school for a time during the war as it was occupied by the Army.
We were split in to small groups and had to go into people`s homes to continue our education.

HI YA-YAAB=,
i left around 1954/5--hunters bar wer`nt that bad, but their were
a few bully boys, i was picked on,
but i did settle down in the next school.
do you live in sheffield, ---as we had a school re-union on 13th oct,
it gets better as more people keep coming
see all the school pictures on the wall and some boys/girls that
was in fulwood homes, would you remember mr thomas bingham
the head teacher, feb 1934 to retire july 1957--.
Hi, Brian,
Yes, I well remember Bingham. He used to wait in the hall for late comers and I had the cane more than once.
I couldn`t do Long division and Bingham sometimes stood in for our regular teacher.I was terrified of him.
Do you remember the chip shop on SharrowVale ? I used to get a bag of chips for a few coppers and we always asked for some"scraps". There was a Pikelet shop a few doors further down where you could watch them making oat cakes on a hotplate.
I live near Great Yarmouth ,so can`t go to the reunion.
Thanks for asking,
Cheers,
yrab

hi again yrab----------
yes i remember the chippy and other things mentioned,
now your making my mouth watering with the oat cakes.
<< now just stop it>>.
hey, do you remember the b40 bomber coming down in
endcliffe park ---feb 22/ed -1944.
tell me of any good times you had in the park.
Hi,
It`s strange, but I didn`t hear about the b40 untillong afterwards. I must have left HB whenit happened.
We used to go into the park at lunch time past a quaint rustic shelter by the side of the road at the corner at the bottom of Brocco bank, where the old men used to sit.
We used to play around near the water and jump across th huge stepping stones.
I think that`s all I can remember about those days.
Nice to have been in touch,
yrab
