View Full Version : What's happened on Fulwood Road this morning?
Deepak_S7 05-02-2008, 08:03 Hi
Ive just driven from the university to Nethergreen.
At 8:45 Fulwood Road was just a big car park going into town
It was stationary all the way from Broomhill to past the lights going to Hangingwater
Its unbelievable, I cant get over how congested and slow it was.
Just not moving at all, absolutely depressing if youre in it I imagine.
Is it always like this?
Deepak
metalman 05-02-2008, 08:06 Possibly the knock on effect of Glossop Road being closed.
As we know only too well in Sheffield, ii only takes a butterfly to sneeze on the Parkway, and gridlock ensues everywhere else.
Ousetunes 05-02-2008, 12:22 Probably due to the city's worst programmed traffic lights at Oakbrook (Nethergreen Road/Hangingwater Road/Oakbrook Road).
This council designed jam ensures traffic tails back to yesterday. On some mornings, traffic is snarled halfway up to High Storrs. The council want you to sit in your cars (emitting the very gases they proclaim to be so very concerned about) whilst the lights allow non-existent pedestrians to cross the road.
A road closed anywhere in the vicinity (or ten miles thereof) ensures the logjam is exacerbated.
High fives and slaps on the back in the council's highways department.
It's (nearly) always like that but the closure of Glossop Road is probably exacerbating it this week.
Yes it's uaually quite snarled at that time in a morning, I do that route every morning to work and usually it takes between 20 to 40 mins if the traffic is bad. This morning it took me 70 mins to get to work and I set off at 7:25  hope they sort out the road soon..
missymarsbar 05-02-2008, 17:11 Ecclesall Road and Brocco Bank were both the same.
MichaelJP 05-02-2008, 18:12 Strange that Glossop road closure would have such an effect - isn't it prohibited at rush hour for cars to cross over to West Street at the crossroads so not many people would use it as a route to town?
Yes, but there is nothing to stop you from turning up from the ring road, and plenty do. I noticed that Clarkehouse Road and Brocco Bank were much quieter this evening, and Ecclesall Road was even more snided than usual

Ecclesall Road is currently a nightmare and with it, Sharrow.
Trying to turn right onto Ecclesall Road from Summerfield Street is nigh on impossible. The lack of a box junction means that Eccy Road vehicles just bunch up across the junction, when Summerfield lights turn green there is nowhere to go, and the timing of lights seems to be set that as Summerfield street lights go back to red, Eccy Road traffic moves forward, then stops across the junction ready for the next "impossible to go" green light.
From multimap: my journey
total distance: 2.89 miles (4.65 km)
est. duration: 7 minute(s) - OK that is unrealistic, but from experience 15-25 minutes used to be the norm until last thursday)
Actual duration: 55 minutes (leaving earlier today to beat the queues or so I thought - 50 minutes)
Selecting the "walking" tab on multimap:
est. duration: 51 minute(s)
I thought so..it is now officially as slow to drive as it is to walk - so what's the weather forecast for tomorrow? :D

No, you can go down Glossop Road onto West St any time of the day.
Walked past Glossop road tonight, looks like it'll be a long time before it's open again. Got massive pumps ready and (I think) a crane. This 'll be to deal with the collapsed sewer.
