View Full Version : My Nortons security has run out, any alternatives
floralfoote 04-02-2008, 21:05 Hi, My Nortons security has expired, what do other forumers use, ie is there a cheaper version I can download, or is there a better version I can download.
I bought the Nortons with the computer last year. Is it a case of you gets what you pay for with this kind of thing?
terminator 04-02-2008, 21:09 Scrap it download avg or avast
AVG or Avast are both downloadable and free for personal use and come highly recommended by IT people.
<<<<<< Use the search faciilty to the left for AVG and/or Avast if you want further information.
Savannah2 04-02-2008, 21:15 Another recommendation for AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) from myself.
Also for firewall Online Amour (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)
Norton removal tool. (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)
WallBuilder 04-02-2008, 21:33 I use AVG and find the free version picks up more than norton ever did. Just before my norton expired completely I even had the two of them on my machine and it did make me wonder why AVG would identify a problem and norton just wouldn't pick it up.
floralfoote 04-02-2008, 22:21 Thanks very much, coul I put all 3 on, avg, avast and online amour?
WhiteHawk 04-02-2008, 22:25 No, don't put more than one anti virus on, they'll conflict with each other and your PC won't like it!!
I've been using Norton for the last 3 years and finally switched to Avast after much recommendation. Never had any problems at all with it.
It doesn't have Spyware though or Firewall so I would also download Spybot Search & Destroy and Zone Alarm.

No, either AVG or Avast (not both) and Online Amour or any other firewall you wish to use.

Zone Alarm Pro is OK, but the ZA Free leave a lot to be desired.

Really? I got that on a recommendation aswell. I haven't had any problems though since I've had it so I can't really complain.

The old ZA Free was excellent.
The two I recommend are COMODO or Online Amour...Both free!
I personally don't use a software firewall on my desktop, just on my laptop.
Is it a case of you gets what you pay for with this kind of thing?
Yes. You pay over inflated prices for inferior SW (with Norton, that is).
There are many free AV/security products that are free (and function much better than Norton).
:)AGV Here, Never had any problems
as a minimum assuming your router doesn't have a firewall you need
one antivirus solution - I suggest AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/)
one antispyware solution - I suggest AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de/) or Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html)
and one firewall - I suggest Comodo (http://www.comodo.com/) or Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp) if your router has a good firewall and you don't connect your machine to other networks e.g. at a friends you can leave the windows firewall in place and not bother with this
I've not tried the online armour product but throw it in the mix as well
if you do use spybot then turn the TeaTimer on it will monitor your registry for key changes made by software as it installs and allow you to prevent or allow the change, bit of a pain if you are installing software but invaluable if some malware is trying to get in without you noticing
you can have more than one antispyware package but they may complain about each other so it's probably best to pick one
