Interested in Spinning and Dyeing wool ?
Date for your diary Saturday 10th May 2008 1pm
Rowena Edlin-White is doing a lecture entitled "25 years of the Spinsters Almanac". She has jointed written many booklets on dyeing and spinning and her quarterly almanac magazine was really popular and entertaining. Should be a good talk

I've got carders, drop spindles, rolags and an Ashford spinning wheel (traditional) for anyone to borrow to see if its their thing. Wheel taks up a bit of space though but is fairly robust with kids but a bit tricky with cats and dogs.

thanks mgknit. The Hallamshire guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers also has equipment for members to borrow.
We meet at Batemoor and Jordanthorpe Community Centre on Dyche Lane. It's on the right hand side if you are coming from the main road (Bochum Parkway). Just after a bus stop after the school.
We meet once a month on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10.30pm to 3.30pm ish. Tea and coffee available but bring your own packlunch. Sandwich shop over the road is also another option. next meeting is this saturday. We have a short business meeting at 10.30am. A raffle and members work slot after that People bring what they've been working on to show and get applause! After lunch we have different things depending on the programme. This month 4 or 5 members who went to the summer school in Cornwall are doing short talks about the workshops they went on.
There is no compulsion to join straight away, you can just come along as a guest to a meeting.(£3, I think). If anyone fancies coming, let me know and I can look out for you

I'd be really interested in coming along - I'd love to learn to dye and spin but not sure where to start properly (I have so far learned that it is essential to wear rubber gloves when dying)

great littleblue. I'll look out for you (mmm maybe hard without knowing what you look like). Just had a look at your blog - I'm definitely with you on the lack of wool in the UK.

I'll be the one with stained fingers.... :hihi:

Wool choice is definitely one of those things I'll rant about any time. Infact, I've got some more musings to add.

I'd love to join but it's right the opposite end of the city for me :(

There is also a group that meet every month in Wentworth, I think it's the first tuesday of every month, if you happen to live this end of town (north)

Hi Jane,

Welcome to the forum. Were you one of the Hallamshire Guild members at the Staffordshire Moorlands Guild Advent Gathering last year? If so you probably passed us, we were the ones from the Arkwright Spinsters who were sat in the corridor. I was the one on the Great Wheel.

The lecture sounds very interesting, I don't know yet whether I will be free to come along but will keep my fingers crossed.

I was lucky enough to go to one of these meetings. The work being done was outstanding and almost mesmerising. I really recommend it to everyone as a great way to meet people with an amazing knowledge of their crafts and also very friendly and welcoming.

thanks for the welcome, No, I wasn't at the staffs moorland event. I've only got into spinning over the last year or so, and now am learning about weaving. Bought an old floor loom from ebay and I am on the steep learning curve bit. I joined the Guild last May - it's great to know people who have the same interests and a massive depth of knowledge. I've done a bit of knitting with hand-dyed (indigo, cochineal and logwood) sort of space-dyed.(not handspun). came out OK and it fits !!
