Cheers mate, nice 1.

Just looked at one in B&Q (for £30) but it has ONE USB IN AND FOUR USB OUT...

That would imply protection for the USB devices....

But I want to protect my PC from the current from the USB device (even if the device is plugged into a mains surge protector it apparently has its own current...)

Who's the expert on this? Can a USB device (in this case an Edirol audio interface) have its own potentially damaging currents?

i just don't get it!

Not sure I follow - USB is a communications connection primarily, it doesn't transfer a great deal of current. Any device connected via USB to your PC would have to have one bad malfunction to fry your PC over the USB.

Just to note, this thread got started partly because of me..

The problem was a fried motherboard with not other indicators such as fried CPU, RAM, etc.. or any kind of shortcircuit..

The only thing we could point to was a red hot chip and an USB device that took current from an external power source... It's a bit of a custom piece of kit so I had a worry that it had somehow shorted out to the USB cable and blown the board..

Anyways... so far it's a matter of conjecture but for future reference I'm going to be looking for such a device as I've only recently discovered mainstream surge protectors for network RJ45 connections as well..

Is this (http://www.bb-europe.com/images/product_images/USBSSP_large.jpg) the sort of thing that you are looking for?

Update: Been cautiously using the USB audio interface again without a sheath... and so far so good :)
..making sure all related devices are connected via mains surge protector.

cheers Martin, chaps...

Was the PC a Dell GX or SX and did it have a fried southbridge chip?? If so Was the chip manufactured in Taiwan or Korea?

Let me know please if you can.

It was an ASUS motheboard (retail) and the red hot chip was the Intel ICH5R which I believe is the southbridge chip...
