Good question, to which I have absolutely no idea. :hihi::confused:

I've always thought of it as Skye Edge. Where did the 'e' come from.

At a guess I would think the answer is something to do with the obvious, it's high up. Look forward to seeing the answer though, undoubtedly someone will know for definite.

Why do you ask, out of interest? Are you from there?

Am I missing the all important factor, or could this be the answer..?

It is surmounted by the 1970s-
built Skye Edge 'View Block'

Or is that just the name of a building in that area?

Sorry, southerner alert :D

Could have been just a nick name that stuck.

As it looks like its on the edge of the sky.

Dont know about the extra 'E' though

Earliest reference I can find is on the 1853 OS map. The name isn't shown on maps of 1823 and 1832.

There used to be a small wood called Sky Edge Plantation on Manor Laithe road - the name probably is probably derived from this.

In this article (http://http://www.chartists.net/Sheffield-Chartists.htm) about Sheffield Chartists there is a reference to Skye Edge dating back to 1839.

If you look up from town, I suppose it's on the edge of the sky??? Just a guess.

Makes sense, apart from the 'E' on the spelling of Skye.

Theres no reason for the extra 'e' according to Sheffield Road names.

My thought is, it was added on to make it more 'romantic & attractive' lots of Sheffield roads are named after other places, I would guess Skye, as in Isle of.. in this case.

Thanks for the web sites. The Sheffield History website is fantastic. There probably is a strong Scottish influence in the name Skye. Sheffield was on the main highway to Scotland and strongly connected with William Wallace.
