View Full Version : Glossop Road closed - 03/02/08
beansforyou 03-02-2008, 15:49 B6069 South Yorkshire - Glossop Road closed both ways between the A61 Upper Hanover Street junction and the Durham Road junction in Sheffield, slow traffic. Diversion in operation.
From the BBC news website.
Apparently 'someone' has cut through some cables and a pipe, something about a sewer, and it could be for a few days, Brook Hill roundabout may be busy (really?!) so think about diversion routes.
That one looks like fun for in the morning- thank you for highlighting it for people who are likely to be going that way.
According to recent signs that stretch was going to be closed from today until the 10th anyway for resurfacing (not before time) so it's fair to assume that it's related. It's going to be a bit of a nightmare around there for a while.
yup, was a nightmare there this morning. Going to make getting to work a bit difficult for the week :(
Yes I thought this was a pre scheduled closure
Yes I thought this was a pre scheduled closure
Yup - it was.
Deepak_S7 03-02-2008, 18:29 Its closed for primary work for the Supertram extension
And about time too
I wish
:)

Glossop Road is closed for resurfacing works , it is closed between Durham Road and Upper Hanover Street . It is bound to cause delays and another route to avoid the area is advised .
redinsheff 04-02-2008, 08:03 I heard on the radio this morning (BBC Sheff) that part of the road had collapsed...?
That may actually make Hanover Way flow better, as the slow movement is mostly due to cars having to take the 90 degree bend into Glossop Road slowly.
There's already a thread on here about it - I'm not clever enough to put a link to it on here!
Some problem with the sewers I think.
It'll be this thread i guess http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=303799
Resurfacing? In Sheffield? Surely not?

Everytime I head up there I don't have to slow down for that bend as I'm lucky if I'm doing 1mph anyway:(
Frenchie 04-02-2008, 10:22 Is the tram still running up to the universtiy then?

It actually usually flows pretty well up from the Ecclesall Road roundabout, but the left lane is always noticeably slower due to the left-turners. Not sure what time you're heading up there....
Is the tram still running up to the universtiy then?Yes, it's only the part up the hill from (Upper) Hanover Street/Way that is shut.
Traffic wasn't flowing anywhere this morning down/up Ecclesall Road as there had been an accident on Ecclesall Road South.
I was trying to get to the Hallamshire and the entire journey round Ecclesall Road/ Ecclesall Road South Endcliffe etc. was gridlock.
metalman 04-02-2008, 11:16 According to the report in the Star (http://www.thestar.co.uk/headlines/TRAFFIC-ALERT-Busy-road-collapses.3740132.jp), a two-meter hole has opened up in the road and engineers from Yorkshire Water are looking into it. :)
That's not good then - if the washed away part of the A61 is anything to go by, it'll be at least 8 months until anything starts to happen to fill it in.
Walk this way to work. It is scheduled to be shut between 3rd Feb and 10th Feb - if the signs are correct.
Noticed this morning a hole in the road though (about a metre square) - just down from the Student's Union. I also overheard a man (looked like he came from one of the properties on Glossop Road) asking about his power.

Just walked past it.
There is a MASSIVE hole under the road, with a massive gap.
Road could be shut for weeks imho.

But this has happened in the city, it will be fixed in no time.
Only those living a little further out are forgotten about.

What like us up here on Middlewood Road....we even haven't got a bus don't you know :hihi:
beansforyou 04-02-2008, 14:39 the lack of a bus at middlewood is beyond a joke isn't it.
But at least the Council make sure the area around the town hall looks nice.
LOL they couldn't even get that right - laid hugely expensive beige stone and then almost immediately ripped up sections of it and replaced them with the unsightly cheapest tarmac possible for the Heart of the City steel signs....:loopy: It boggles the mind how such departments are (not) run. I'd sort out the collapsed Glossop Road sewer and the broken-for-8-months-plus A61 in less than 30 minutes.
goldenfleece 11-02-2008, 12:22 Is it open yet?
dan_999uk 11-02-2008, 12:25 No. At least another week, if not more.

how exactly?
goldenfleece 15-02-2008, 11:38 how exactly?
by actually doing some work I imagine, unlike the Council...
driven up the diversion every day and never once seen ANY workman on that closed bit of Glossop road........they are making a meal of this all right....

Thats odd because I have driven past on the ring road three times this week and theres been a jcb/ lorries working each time
dan_999uk 15-02-2008, 14:23 There's always been people on site when I've been past (in the daytime at least).
MichaelJP 15-02-2008, 14:40 Glossop Road could become the new Division Street which seems to have suffered massive open cast mining operations for years with no clear progress.
Me Superbi 23-02-2008, 08:58 Roads open again now.
Oh thats good news, my commute to work on 120 was taking 20 min's longer because of the diversion.

same here on the 40...I was so happy to see the road open yesterday evening

The reason for the work on Division Street is that they're putting in all the services for the new retail quarter.
