View Full Version : What do sheffielders like?
harrietgirl 23-02-2005, 18:54 Hey guys. I'm doing a research project for my uni degree and basing it on sheffield. Its to do with media audiences and the Internet. I'm looking at the age group of 20-40.
I've got a short list of questions which I would really appreciate any of you lovely forum lot to have a go at answering. it would really help my project.
Are you m/f?
Are you 20-30 or 31-40?
Are you married, in a relationship or single?
What area is your occupation? Eg. sales, management, education, etc.
Do you own your residence?
Which daily newspaper (if any) do you regularly read?
Do you use the internet to access news?
Which news sources do you use online?
How often do you access the internet? (Once a month, week, day)
Do you have dial-up, broadband, or connection at work?
What type of Internet sites do you browse (1 to 5 rating with 5 being the most browsed and 1 not at all):
news , hobbies , banking , travel , business , sport , pubs/clubs , theatre , cinema , politics , sport , fashion , music , cars/motorbikes , lifestyle , other (please specify).
The easiest way to answer i guess would be to cut and paste the questions into your reply. Thanks so much for your help!
Harriet
cgksheff 23-02-2005, 19:37 Being the cynic that I am, may I suggest (with the greatest of respect) that you might wish to look at redesigning your method of research. If you are serious, you may wish to tell us a lot more about youself , your degree and your research.
You are asking for some personal information here that I, for one, would never answer in a public forum.
Some questions are poorly designed and do not cover all options within a question.
There are questions here that look just like a market research questionaire and do not seem relevant to your implied research.
Lastly, you have implied elsewhere on the forum that you have recently finished studying History at "Uni". Which university are you currently at?
alchresearch 23-02-2005, 19:53 Plus you might want to take it to PM if you don't want to start filtering out all the junk in between each posting.
muddycoffee 23-02-2005, 21:15 I'll tell you what sheffielders don't like.
Strangers asking personal questions on a public forum on the internet.
Especially vague rating 1-5 questions.
You need to meet people face to face for something like that. In my view this is the most lazy attitude to research that there is at the moment. Get your finger out, and get some work done!
Agree to all the above.....
As long as this survey is done in conjunction with face-to-face research I think it is an ok way of doing research. If this is the entire research then it would be a bit of a cop-out.
Also you may want to make a much tidier and professional survey
RunningFree 23-02-2005, 22:54 Sheffielders like Sex, Sex and more Sex man! Yeah Baby!
I'd love to have a go at answering your questions but really cannot be bothered as they are not only personal but very badly drafted.
Take some advice from the above remarks and then try again.
harrietgirl 23-02-2005, 23:19 I go to sheffield uni. I did an ba in history, now doing an ma in media. I'm sorry if you thought the questions were personal. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone.
The questions were part of my research. I sent multiple hard copies out, but thought the forum would be another good avenue. I didn't want to overload anyone with questions hence the shorter format.
Obviously this wasn't the right place for the work,
sorry
poimaster 24-02-2005, 01:29 good effort though....its always good to get research results from a variety of sources. Better luck next time & hope the research works out
Kristian 24-02-2005, 01:55 Guys,
I think you're giving Harrietgirl a hard time here. If you didn't like her questions, don't answer them.
I wonder if she got any responses via PM?
K x
Yes, but surely you learn from your mistakes - isn't that what research is all about?
KATIEB_23 24-02-2005, 11:58 Yeah I think you're all being a bit harsh on her too - It's not as if she said she was writing a dissertation & that short questionnaire was the only way she was collecting data!
I think it was a good idea to use this forum for stuff like that - You avoid having to stand outside in the snow hassling people with 'excuse me, do you have a minute...'
I didn't take offence to the questions at all.
shefsite 24-02-2005, 15:37 If any of you would be willing to do the 'proper questionaire' which hopefully addresses your criticisms of the data publicly available on the forum and lacking in options, you can do it here:
http://tinyurl.com/5kzg8
And it would be very much appreciated if you would. It was posted previously on the forum for a short time, but due to the nature of the questions about a potential new news site the moderators removed it in the grounds it promoted competition to Sheffield Forum.
Any responses would be much appreciated and the data is fully annoymous and will not be published.
Thanks!

Sounds like you have a problem.
I recommend you shut up.
Students rule, this City has 2 of the best Unis in the UK so obviously students are going to come here aren't they? If you have a problem with them, don't visit student populated areas, pubs etc, mmkay?

Um, why have you posted this twice? We know you hate students, there's no need to labour the point.
Thats another thing. Brainless city developers. Instead of keeping all students in certain areas like S7 S10 and S11 they go and build student accommodation in the City Centre so avoiding student populated areas isn't possible anymore. And when you say we have 2 really good Uni's what you realy mean is we have some of the best night life in the UK., As when picking where you want to study I reckon thats the biggest puller...

Go on, tell us why you hate them so much!
DanSumption 25-02-2005, 15:55 Tell you what I hate: people who post the same things twice.

Good idea, you'll struggle to find any students there. :|

harrietgirl 25-02-2005, 19:10 Hi guys. I provoked quite a storm yesterday- sorry about that! Thanks for your comments- i completely forgot it was a public forum (doh!) and appreciate you don't want your details for everyone to see!
Its part of my media audience assignment for my ma. There is a website connection for the survey (which is private and cannot be viewed by anyone). But I understood that there could be a problem with taking people away from the forum.
