View Full Version : How to make your internet browser faster.
Hi guys....you getting tired of slow page loads on your browser then heres how to speed things up really easy......
First off........ STOP using Internet Explorer its crap and too many exploits in security.
Second.....download FIREFOX browser(just type it in google its free) its far better, less exploits and super add-ons and plugins.
You are given the option to import all your fav's/bookmarks from IE to FIREFOX so set up is easy.
Right heres how to speed things up(lets face it we all get tired of slow page loads.........)
In FIREFOX address bar type in .....
about:config
then hit go....
dont panic ....yes its brings up loads of stuff that may mean nothing to you.
Now just below the address bar a new bar has appeared titled..
FILTERS
In the bar type in...........
network
Now scroll down to........
network.http.pipelining
double click this so it is set to.......... TRUE
Now just below that is..........
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
double click and change the value to.......
10
Click ok.
THATS IT> Now go to your home page or SHEFFIELD FORUM and see how much faster it loads.
BETTER YES? thought so.
For more tweaks go to YOU TUBE and search firefox tweaks or even vista tweaks if your one of the unfortunate people who has switch to this terrible OS(be carefull with vista tweaks)
MY recommendation on vista.........
(wait 12 months, buy a super fast PC with loads of RAM 4GB then use vista, by then Microsoft may have got it right....but dont hold your breath)
good advice is this, i was already using firefox as i think internet explorer is way too slow, has made a significant difference too so cheers for that pal
Thanks mate.
If anyone else is using this tweak and likes it please post your appreciation so other know it works and i'll post some more tweaks.
LETS SPEED THING UP
O and for everyone who thinks the new service pack that is about to be released for vista will fix all the bug in it.....sorry but it doesnt think well have to wait for service pack 3 erm 4 erm 5 ...god knows.
PS for all you people running cracked vista with the timelocker fix......WARNING SP1 resets it and deactivates your OS..
so keep your eyes open and keep watching the net for the SP1 fix due out in next two weeks.
HOW DO I KNOW THIS?.....Im running SP1 for vista on a test rig.
ImpInaBox 02-02-2008, 10:11 Hmm - seems to work for me. The Mozillazine website (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.http.pipelining) warns that it may not work for all web servers - just those that support HTTP 1.1. Looks like that may be most of them from what I've seen so far - in a 2 minute check around some familiar sites.
yeah post some more twweks, im always up for speeding things up
ImpInaBox 02-02-2008, 10:18 Looks like HTTP 1.1 has been around for yonks and is supported by the Apache web server from version 1.2 onwards. Most hosts are on v2.something now so should be safe enough. Presumably IIS also supports it - anybody know for sure?
fnkysknky 02-02-2008, 10:19 Bear in mind that pipelining HTTP requests will break some web pages. HTTP 1.1 servers should support pipelining but not all do, not correctly anyway. Also the most requests that can be pipelined is 8 so there's no point setting network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to anything above 8. It won't break anything by doing so but it just doesn't have any more benefit than setting it to 8.
Fasterfox (http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/) is an add-on for Firefox that will configure pipelining and do other tweaks for you without having to edit the config if you'd prefer it that way. It also displays page load times in the status bar.

IIS now supports pipelining for HTTP but not for HTTPS as far as I'm aware. There was code in Firefox to check whether it was talking to an IIS server and if it was to disable pipelining for that site even if you'd enabled it - not sure if this is still the case. The reason being that the Firefox developers said pipelining isn't supported correctly in IIS.
yes fnkysknky it max's out at 8 just chose 10 as nice round number and it doesn't effect anything like you said.
garlicbread 02-02-2008, 11:33 Good advice matey works a treat and agree with craigus post some more tweaks
This has been around the forums 3/4 times now that i can remember, but my best advise to anyone now is to..
STOP USING FIREFOX!, Download Safari, -- Sure it will take some getting used to, but it will be worth it in the long run.
oh, and there's nothing wrong with vista, my PC is 18 months old and it runs it fine.. I don't have 4GB ram and a super fast machine

I've been using safari for a while and it is fabulous.
nothing wrong with vista u say.......
recycle bin disappears at random..........
loads of background services enabled that the general user would never use...
configuring vista to run uber fast is a pain even for the most techie person.....
o if you think vista is ok on an old machine try it on a new pc with 4G ram a mighty difference but still full of bugs.....not only my opinion but MICROSOFTS too check out their vista issuses page......vista on an old pc= XP
ps. been a beta tester for MS for awhile now

it all depends what you call an old machine? over a year old? over 2 years old? but then there are some machines that are under a year and wouldn't run vista, and some that are over (like mine) and don't have a problem.
it all depends on the machine, not the age, and as I keep saying its not vista that's the issue, its the 3rd party companies that make the software and drivers, vista is new, from the ground up, it works differently than previous windows, talks to the hardware in a different way etc, companies aren't used to the new methods yet so things are buggy...
ps. been a beta tester for MS for awhile now
as have a lot of people on here (including me) I have been part of Microsofts CPP (Customer Preview Program) since windows 98, testing Release candidates, and betas :)
sorry Ghozer maybe i should have been a little clearer. yes depends on spec and old im assuming 3 yrs or more i suppose.
Thanks Ghozer, using Safari now and most impressed.
regards Mick
JamesBlacks 03-02-2008, 00:06 Yes my browsing is much faster, thanks
Savannah2 03-02-2008, 08:29 Or, for those that don't want to edit the settings manually, they can install Fasterfox (http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/)

Haven't tried Safari but I agree about Firefox, it's not the best browser to use if security is your main concern, Opera beats it hands down, and it's not too shabby on speed either!
I've been using Opera for over 5 years and love it, so I'd be reluctant to try out Safari, but I'll be willing to give it a spin if I ever fall out with Opera, although that seems highly unlikely right now.:)
Savannah2 03-02-2008, 17:17 I have tried Safari and didn't like it, but then I am a hard to please cow...lol
I have always liked Opera, just that until recently it didn't like my PC.

That's a shame, what seemed to be the problem Savannah?

I tried for nearly three years and I always got the same error message: "Opera has encountered an error and needs to close" (even on a clean install)
Today it works fine...strange these pesky PCs. :)

Sounds like a conflicting program on your PC, trouble is it's not always obvious where the conflict lies.
I downloaded the brilliant free calculator from Moffsoft (knocks socks off the rubbish tiny calulator that Windows gives you!)
I thoroughly recommend you try it out if you haven't got it already.

Anyway, I was so impressed I told my mum to install the Moffsoft calculator.
She did so but told me there was a blank button where the "divide" button should have been.
After much head scratching and uninstalling, redownloading and reinstalling no solution could be found so we left it at that.
last Summer I entriely reformatted my mum's harddrive because of another reason.
Suprise suprise the Moffsoft calculator now had it's "divide" button in it's rightful place!;)

With this happening on a clean install it may have been a driver conflict.

astraman 03-02-2008, 22:32 Just been trying the Safari browser. It is FAST!!!!
I usually use Opera for most things and Firefox for torrent searches. Safari seems to be fster than both.
Kingmaker2 04-02-2008, 01:53 Just been trying the Safari browser. It is FAST!!!!

On the strength of your comment astraman, I decided to give Safari a whirl.
I wasn't immeadiately taken with the look of the browser but that's another issue.
At first I too was impressed with it's speed.
I then decided to do some side by side comparisons(Opera vs Safari) using web addresses that I hadn't used before and that were in neither browser's cache or preselected options.
I experimented by selecting a few counties and then adding .com on the end ie. portugal.com , japan .com, spain.com etc etc.
There really wasn't much to split between the 2 browsers, that is until I decided to got to http://english.china.com/
I got some interesting results from 4 browsers.
I timed the browser until it rendered all the images on the page.
(Note: I'm on a slow internet connection at a mere 250 kbps)
These are the results after the initial first opening of page ie after the page was cached, (Pre cached times shown in brackets)
1st Opera 20 seconds (Pre cached 32 sec)
2nd Safari 20-24 seconds (times vary on multiple tries) (Pre Cached 37 sec)
3rd Firefox 32-34 seconds (Pre cached 37 secs)
4th Internet Explorer 30 seconds (Pre cached 57 secs)
Internet Explorer was the only one that correctly displays the changing photo image at the top of the page though.
Opera displays an image but it doesn't change like it does in Internet Explorer.
Firefox doesn't dispay the top image at all.
Safari doesn't display the image at all either but has a blue box with a question mark in it.
So If it's all about speed, then I still think Opera is hard to beat, although admittedly Safari gives it a run for the money on certain websites.
Safari's look needs a drastic makeover to win me over though.
