Adz 02-02-2008, 10:40 When we first got TIlly she was sick every time we went out in the car. We tried herbal travel pills and to be honest they were no good. We tried to take her out early so we could feed her after our journey, that seemed to make a difference. We also tried to make her feel secure so she didn't feel like she was falling about so we had her secured with a seatbelt harness rather than in the boot (she was worst in the boot). Over the last 6 months she has got used to the car (suspect she has not done this regularly prior to coming to us) and is no longer sick, i don't think she has been sick for 2 months now and we can feed her before we go out in the car now. Lotti 02-02-2008, 10:50 I used to postpone meals until after a car journey (still do if it's a journey longer than 2 hours) and used give Takara half a ginger biscuit a little while before car travel. Worked a treat :) She no longer needs them as she grew out of it. Hayley1 04-02-2008, 16:00 I hope Ellie grows out of it. I have a harness and seatbelt, and she generally lies down, but if we're out too long, then she is ill even on empty stomach. I had bought some of those Johnsons ginger tablets, and she managed to travel around 10 miles without being ill, although she was drooling. I'm not too sure whether they would work on a longer journey though. She goes almost everywhere with us in the car, but we've yet to take her out of Sheffield. Next month we have a longer journey, down to Wiltshire, and I'm really concerned that she'll be so poorly by the time we get there, because of her size. I mentioned it to the vet this morning, but he totally dismissed me. My border Collie takes a metaclopromide tablet for the long journeys, and they work a treat, but ellie is a great deal smaller. SpeedDemon 06-02-2008, 19:48 My GSD has been travel sick since the day we picked him up as a pup! He can manage about a mile, before he starts to seriously drool, then any more than a couple of miles n he just throws up! We took him to norfolk in 2006, but only with the help of some tablets prescribed by our vet. I believe they had a mild sedative to help him relax. We managed to get there and back with no sickness, but the vet was only prepared to prescribe the exact amount we needed, and because it was such a long journey. Unfortunately, i can't remember the name of them, but definitely worth having a word with a vet (a different one, if your own vet is not understanding) TattyBear 06-02-2008, 21:04 Funny ou should ask, pippa has always suffered from it. The only way I have found to avoid it is by not feeding her at all until we get to our destination. Well this afternoon I forgot my own advice and fed her her dinner, then drove a 10min journey to groomers to get her nails trimmed and on the way back she spewed all over back of taxi!!!!! nice! Star24* 07-02-2008, 12:07 my pup doesn't really suffer with travel sickness, but he he hates the car,He has done since day one and cries constantly, weve tried giving him toys/bone sto disctract him but he hates it! Any ideas anyone?! beansfeast 07-02-2008, 12:26 My dog isn't too bad if we put her bed in the boot of the car, she's rarely sick but as soon as she gets in she starts panting! If her bed isn't in the boot then she'll keep trying to sit up which almost seems to make her panting worse! We'll be getting an estate car in a few months time and I'm hoping that by having a cage in the boot she'll feel more secure and so be less stressed... medusa 07-02-2008, 12:33 Molly has travel sickness too, but then again she has a really dodgy stomach at the best of times. She's not bad on motorway journeys, but anything that involves lots of corners and she's sick every few miles for the whole of the journey (crossing Snake to go to my BF's family involves a stop every 20 minutes or so to clear up and change the pile of towels that she has so she's not too uncomfortable). She's better if she's not eaten but will still drool a lot and bring up whatever water's in her stomach. We have yet to find a solution to this apart from not feeding her before journeys and reassuring her the best we can. It doesn't seem to stress her out much so it's obviously not related to nerves, but I suffer from travel sickness if I'm not driving so I know that it's not much fun for her. Plain Talker 07-02-2008, 12:42 have you tried joy-rides type children's travel sickness tablets? I was recommended those for my dog whn he was younger, as he was a bad traveller then, (he improved greatly as he got a bit older) they seemed to work. Hayley1 08-02-2008, 17:10 I think the metaclopromide is the same as kids travel sickness pills PT, yes! |
