View Full Version : Best hills for placky bagging/sledging?
Hiya everyone, has anyone got a favourite slope for sledging/placky bagging?
I was brought up around Gleadless, and always went on "the camels hump" at the side of Leighton Road.
If I was visiting my cousin in Stannington, we used to go into the field opposite the paddling pools on Rivelin Valley Road.
The only place I see lots of people sledging etc these days is in Chatsworth, so where would anybody recomend and does anyone want to go and play?
Meersbrook Park is good, very steep.
By far the best place for sledging is on a hill just after "suprise view"...Hathersage. The farmer opens his field up to the public and they sometimes even have St johns ambulance there in case of any major disasters..like an avelanch or something!
As a kid I used to sledge on Abbeydale Golf course just off Twentywell Lane.
Sometimes tried Poynton Woods or Ladies Spring Woods.
If I couldn't be arsed to walk far I would sledge down the bank at the bottom of St Quentin Rise. (in fact I've done that in the last few years whilst drunk!)

The best place for sledging in Stannington is the "camel 'umps" as we fondly referred to them as kids. The school fields, starting at shooters grove school on Wood Lane and leading down, passed the Loxley (was Stannington) college and down to the Myers Grove playing fields. I remember we used to have the Star come round whenever it snowed to take pictures for the 'local news' bit. Difficult to do the whole lot in one run due to the flat bits (also known as the football pitches) but some good slopes.
Of course, when I last went I was about 3 feet shorter than I am now, so it might have seemed bigger than it is :)
sammysowls 23-02-2005, 11:54 bole hills used be my fav when as a kid
I suppose there are the monkey bumps at Bradway at the edge of the rec, where bmx riders tend to go, but they aren't a long enough run for decent sledging - nursery slopes for little 'uns maybe!
missrabbit 23-02-2005, 12:38 I too grew up in Gleadless and have often come flying down Leighton Road onto Blackstock Road on a bin liner. I now live just off Eccy road and i guess Botanical Road (the steep one just up from the Polish club) would be great for sledging, but the only problem is the main road at the bottom. If it snowed so much that there was no traffic then i would be straight down there!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Yeah, but covered in dog cr*p.
bigflesh 23-02-2005, 12:41 just off abbeylane, bottom of dale view rd, take the road for the abbey (beauchief), about a 10 minute walk theres some big 'ills there!
get ya wellies on!
There's a a nice, steep hill in Firth Park which I used to placky bag (is that what they call sledging down a hill with a sheet of cardboard under yer bottom?) when I was a child.
There's even an asphalt path, nice selection of mature trees and a stream to break your fall, and your limbs, if you fail to stop in time.
I haven't done it for years and haven't seen anyone do it for ages. I expect the younger generation are too busy with their consoles, or still under curfew.
I'd probably be arrested if I did it now.
jonsastar 23-02-2005, 13:20 The devils bump in meersbrook park used to be fun, no good for adults though, not enough hill to sledge-plaggy bag on.
It was excellent when I was a kid, used to freeze over to a point that you could go down it on your feet, excellent.
Mam tor is probably good for a bit of sledging, if you don't kill your self in the proccess.:loopy:

No that was what you called going down a hill on a plastic bag or binliner or plastic sheet, :)
My sleding haunts as kid were the fields on East Bank road, but I don't know how big they would seem now.
What about Lodge Lane for you Jackass fanatics out there!
That I would pay to see.

Coming soon to a sheffieldforum near you, the "who's that guy who just [broke both his legs / got arrested] sledging in Firth Park" thread...
Has anyone ever gone down the ski slope on a placcy bag / bit of cardboard / sledge / butt protector of choice?

I could try that. There is (was) a hole in the fence separating the top of the Ski Slope from the playing field next door so I could nip through there, stick a piece of cardboard under me botty and jump.
Of course, I would need sponsorship first (to pay the fines, compensation, legal costs and hospital care).
bassplayer 23-02-2005, 14:38 Not quite a hill but Blake Street.....0 - 50 in 5 seconds...nuff said!
clogginchris 23-02-2005, 16:21 I used to take my kids up Ringinglow Road to the field at the back of the Norfolk Arms - Jacob's Ladder I think it's called. Sometimes the local ski club used to have a small tow set up.
Amazing!! jacobs ladder yeah!! its so good there, or anywhere around forge dam park!!
coopster1974 23-02-2005, 21:36 Concord Park golf course just up from the tee where you have to hit it over the river - quality
The best place we went when we were kids was Abbeydale Golf Club down Beauchief Drive. The actual hole was the 8th that ran alongside the drive. Excellent sledging at times esp when it was thick.
I seem to recall seeing a photo of the sledging at the golf course in the 60's but cannot remember where.
Great times even though I was trespassing !!
alchresearch 24-02-2005, 12:11 Our favourite place was Wood Hill - a very steep hill just off Beaver Hill Road in Woodhouse. The best part was the stream at the foot of the hill, so we built snow ramps to go flying across it.
I was quite disappointed to go back to it recently to find it completely overgrown. I'm hoping the heavy snows have revived interest in it today though!
Bad_Hair_Day 24-02-2005, 12:34 It's got to be Shepherd's Hill at Intake, just opposite the Hollin Bush. We used to have a 'pile on' - about 15 kids all going down the hill on a big plastic sheet, then we'd wander up to the chippy on Alnwick Road for a 5p bag o'chips! Marvellous!
fudpucker 24-02-2005, 15:55 Arbourthorne playin' fields were the best, when it was really bad you could get from the top level, near the pond all the way down to the Norfolk park gates, quality. ;-)
And ....and once with a bit of "legging" we got to the big hill in norfolk park where there'd be about 100 kids with the plastic tarpaulin's of the building sites doing some mega pile on's, bloody noses and bruised arse bones were the order of the day!! lol
