View Full Version : Know of the old sweet shop Alan52 23-02-2005, 11:30 Does anyone remember the old sweet shop at the top of Arbourthorne Rd I think it was in some sort of park between the two Hurlfeild schools (boys & girls . hazel 23-02-2005, 11:57 Can't remember the sweet shop Alan, just a vague elusive recollection. Do you mean near the Toll Bar cottage which was near Gleadless Rd or near Butt woods, or further on towards the schools . I can remember rows of allotments at the top of Arbourthorne Rd. hazel graham_mca 24-02-2005, 20:31 It's a different sweet shop but anyone remember the sweet shop in a conservatory round the back of a semi on Stradbrooke Road? Late 60's I would guess when I lived in one of the prefabs along there. It was run by and old couple, mostly frequented by school kids from Stradbrooke School I would imagine. Graham playman 24-02-2005, 20:55 was it the one at the end of myrtle springs opposite the pig farm, top house in the row of houses, converted back to a house and the row was renovated, i used to catch the no 30 bus home and get off at the top of arbourthorne rd and walk down the cutting past the old farm house at the side of the quarry after getting some sweets from the shop. playman 24-02-2005, 20:59 the allotments were where the houses are now on toll bar, the old toll bar house was at the other end leading to gleadless road at the top of the hill. the cutting ran down the side of them leading to below the quarry on gleadless road. hazel 24-02-2005, 21:33 I remember the Toll Bar cottage cos I used to creep past I was told I had to pay a penny to go past and we never had any money. The allotments had fences made of old doors so you never knew which was the real one. Was there a "big house" standing in it's own grounds with a pond or am I miss- remembering it.? More u say about the shop more I can remember it. prob not very clear cos I never had any money to spend I used to call at the allotments for flowers from an old man. Walking inside (when I had found the right door) was like entering the magic garden. Bees humming , birds singung and flowers everywhere. He had a shed with an old fashioned water butt and an armchair to sit in. I can see it and smell it now. We used to be strewers at the catholic church , which meant throwing petals down for the priest and the Holy Sacrament to walk on. Hence the flowers. Hazel extaxman 24-02-2005, 21:43 Hazel Me and my wife used to go to the same place for our flowers - really good and very cheap. Do you remember the little duck pond in the garden, think it must have been the original Mrytle Spring. Did you know that the people who used to own that place also owned Archers sportshop on Bramall Lane? hazel 24-02-2005, 21:54 No I don't know anything about them only that I thought them very Posh I came from the council estate and they seemed in a different time a bit like the families in Enid Blyton. I remember the ducks tho. I think I'm talking 1945/6 at the end of the war. Hazel. Alan52 25-02-2005, 11:43 Many thanks for your replys the only reason why I asked about the shop was when I was at school (Hurlfield Boys) we did cross country running and we ran past the shop and if we had sone money we would stop on the way back to school and buy some sweetsor a drink. Is it still there PS sorry to here about all the bad weather you are having. Lickszz 25-02-2005, 16:42 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=551&highlight=Fashioned There is this sweet shop here. I think it's great. playman 25-02-2005, 18:17 the big house we used to call the castle cos it was shaped like a castle surrounded by an orchard and yes the duck pond, alas no longer there now a property developer bought the land and built on it, but the pond is still there it had to be left in situ and they built round it, if you remember the pig farm that the broadheads used to own, it too is part of the development, in fact the road leading in goes down the old pig farm drive. JohnJay 22-10-2006, 18:53 I also remember the small sweet shop near the 2 Hurlfield Schools. I'm sure it was called either Pygots or Pigots (pronounced Pie_gots). Alan52 29-10-2006, 11:01 GDAY Hazel yes thats the one the Toll Bar cottage.Used to get gob stoppers and blackcurrent lolly pops on a stick Alan |
