ok I have been lurking for a few weeks now, watching you all and following your 'knits'. I am now at the stage where I have knitting wool out from the cupboard - it's still blinking though after spending so long hiding in there. i wonder what's the thing with socks? you are all sock knitting mad:loopy:. I have never tried them coz they have shape to them and shape means looking at a pattern and being a bit clever. let me into the secret - what's so good about knitting socks?

ps
i nearly ventured to the knitting meeting last night - the chocolate sold it to me, but a family crisis started and I had to put my carrrier with my wool in back on the chair along with my car keys.

You are probably better off buying your socks from the supermarket - try gloves instead, you can see them when worn ;) (kidding everyone :hihi:)

in a word yes, I Am! lol

I enjoy making socks, they are small enough to carry with me to work on as I travel, etc. also, as I have problems with limited movement in my arm, they are small enough to hold, and not weigh me down, like a garment would do.

I am new to the dark side and can still remember being wholesome and pure. Socks are brilliant. They are small enough to carry around and the results are fairly quick or in Mara's case extremely quick. The selection of yarns available are amazing and it is so nice to make something for someone which will not cost an arm and a leg and will be done within a week.

I was adamant I was not going to follow the trend and knit socks, but then I gave in whilst on holiday (rock n roll huh) and really enjoyed knitting the first one!

I have second sock Syndrome, by the time I get to the end of the first I can't bare to knit the second

I have managed to knit a few complete pairs, but I prefer to look at other peoples I think.

I started knitting socks last January and have knitted them pretty much non-stop ever since.

I usually knit a pair of socks a week and there is great satisfaction in that because it's not long before you have something wearable. I find it really difficult to knit long projects like jumpers because when you have a big project, you have so much to follow on the pattern and you are with the same wool over and over. When you knit a pair of socks you are with the same wool for only a short time and then you move on to the next skein.

I like giving my knitting away and knitted socks are loved by everyone. They make great knitted gifts.

When I went to Madrid in the summer I knitted socks everywhere. On the underground, on the bus, in a queue and some people thought I was crazy but this one old woman with two walking sticks raced over to me (as fast as she could with her frailty) and said it was lovely to see someone knitting socks again and that she hadn't seen that since the Spanish Civil War! To some people it seems really old-fashioned but I think that knitting socks is so satisfying and knitted socks are far superior to any shop socks I own. The old lady said it was a real shame people no longer knit socks over there.

I haven't quite gone over to the dark side of sock knitting. But I have my dpns, sock pattern and wool at the ready. I'm just trying to finish my gloves (fetchings) before I have a go with socks, I prefer to have one project on the go, otherwise I will never get them finished.

Yup, sock knitting is great. I can fit a project or two in my handbag to go with me wherever, and they are quick to finish. I find they are also a good way of trying out new stitch patterns (rather than a jumper, for example) because if you don't like the pattern you can either hide it under your trousers or give up and there is not much knitting to rip back and try something new. It is also a good way to try out different yarn, and treat yourself to something that would be too expensive to knit a whole jumper in. I have made a lovely pair of sock in silk yarn, for example.

I don't have sock knitting on my lap right now at all. :suspect:

I thought it was a complete waste of time and not something I'd want to do...until I tried it. I'm now hooked.

Socks are great - they are a fantastic small project that you can try out new yarns and stitches on:) There are some fantasic sock yarns about and it makes an affordable but fancy project. For me I can finish a simple pair in about a fortnight rather than a few months for something bigger. Try it - you might like it:D

For me its all about the fit. If you get it right then they fit the foot like a glove fits a hand. There's none of this "fits shoe size 4-8" business and they don't fall down or strangle your ankle. I've had shop socks on today for the first time in about a year (the laundry fairy fell behind in her duties) and I've felt the difference.

Not knitted a pair yet but getting there. First one a bit confusing as its hard to visualise whats going one with 5 needles prodding and poking. :huh:but the sense of achievement is  It's also a way of starting a 'stash' without feeling too guilty the yarns around are to die for and not everyone needs a garage to store them in like Peakwool Her yarns are exquisite and very reasonable , alpaca, silk, etc. Can't wait to go over on to the dark side
