The last time I went in they didn't have a carvery but I think they did a veggie meal, they do a nice sunday lunch. My friend is a veggie and we only eat in places that do, it is a nice pub aswell the best in Stannington IMO.

If you want carvery and sunday lunch then the Crosspool tavern is the best for that. They accomodate for all.

I was in the Crosspool Tavern earlier, and was like "WTF?!" at their prices! £7.45 for scampi and chips?! In the end I had a child's portion for £3.99.

Back on topic though, being a native of Stannington myself, I've had many a meal in the Peacock, it's very good IMO, good service, reasonably priced and decent portions, and if you ask them for "no peas" with your scampi, it comes with no peas, not even a little bit of greenery on the side of the plate, unlike other pubs.

I think you find the prices are expensive on certain dishes, the sunday lunch is (or was when I went) an average price for sunday lunch in a pub. It's no more expensive than what you get in one of the chain pubs and much better.

Peacock probably does some of the best pub grub in Stannington, the Top House (Crown and Glove) does good food as well, I'm usually in there every Wednesday night for the quiz.

I've only been in once a few Christmas's ago but thought it wasn't bad.

Do you ever win the quiz, or do coffin dodgers attend? :D

Definately Crown & Glove the food is far better than in the Peacock.

I have had two meals in the Peacock, in the last three weeks, and I have to say that I found both meals disappointing.

in fairness, I do understand that at the time it was a releif manager on duty there, as the usual landlord was on holiday. So maybe that explained why the food was not up to a good standard.

the first time I went in, I had a jacket potato, with cheese.

the spud was miniscule, and the cheese virtually non-existant. the spud was microwaved to death, and stringy. Yuck. the pudding was nice, mind you; traditional roly-poly and custard. that was nice:- good, old-fashioned "sticks to yer ribs" grub. nice quantities, too!

the second time I went in I had the veggie lasagne, and though the lasagne itself was ok, the veggetable accompaniments were clock-cold, and hard. Not pleasant.
(I had a side of Breaded mushrooms with the meal, and they were nice.)

(I might see if I can persuade my mate to try rich/ sanman's suggestion of going to the "top house" -Crown and Glove- instead. I havent been in the top house for, what, nearly 25 years. !!)

I've also heard good reports about the food at the Robin Hood, Apparently the carvery on a Sunday comes with over 12 different vegetable dishes.

Actually yeah I've won the quiz a few times, the prize is 8 pints of beer or lager.

However, the Top House is changing hands soon as the current Landlord and Landlady have decided to up sticks as the Brewery have put the rent up too high.

Always happens though that, a couple get the pub off to a good thing, get friendly with the regulars etc, then the Brewery puts their rent up and they sod off, it has happened 3 times in the last 2 years at the nearby Sportsman, but Sportsman's full of chavs off the estates anyway.

How are you allowed in top house? I always thought that you had to have lived in the village for at least 40 years before you picked up the accent where then you are allowed through into the bar.

My Dad used to go in years ago, in actual fact he and Mum had one of their first ever dates in there about 100 years ago (and if they ask I didn't say that ;) ).

It also helps that my Mum's brother goes in every Wednesday night for the quiz as well.

Because of the fact that the sportsman is so near to the Top House, you will need ID if you are under 50, to make sure you arn't a 15 year old

I love the Peacock, it's so warm and friendly inside and out, foods good, fireplace is great, so are the people that run it, don't re-call a carver there though, must be something new, although i can't see where they would have much room for one.

They don't have a carvery poppins, but when I have been the food has been nice and the atmosphere is good. Are you sure you live in connecticut? so how long since you were in Stannington?

Meh, I'm only 28 and I'm on first name terms with the management in there.

I also have a very strong and broad accent as people who've met me at meets will know.

Went to the Peacock tonight for a drink and a bite to eat, and while we found the main courses of meat and tater pie with veg to be good value for money, the dessert was disappointing. We ordred treacle roly poly with custard which cost £1 each (cheap enough) but was very dry and contained virtually no treacle. I would have rather paid double and had a nice lashing of treacle in there. My only other gripe (I know I sound like a grumpy old man) was the beer. The Peacock serves Thwaites beers, which are usually very good. However, because most of the staff tend to be teenage girls, wearing corporate tee shirts and baseball caps, they have no idea how to pull a good pint, and have maybe never been shown. So one is reduced to drinking smoothflow, or worse still lager ( for Gods sake). I suppose being typically British, we accept their offering and walk away tut tutting, not wishing to make a scene etc. vowing never to return.

My main objection to The Peacock is that the one time we went for a meal in what was laughingly called the non-smoking area we still came home with the smell of stale tobacco on our clothes. A shame really as it's my new local.

Roll on the smoking ban in pubs where food is served.

I agree.

A total ban on smoking in pubs is long overdue IMO, if only the establishment would get a move on and bring it in, bloody silly Govt and their red tape that makes everything take 20 years to bring in to law

If you're interested The Peacock do quite reasonably priced steaks. I think they do a 12oz rump for about £3.99 which is a lot cheaper than many other pubs.

This should be popular with the veggies:hihi:

They don't have a vegetarian carvery but they are pretty good for grub. I'm sure they have a veggie option.
