My computer has recently had a massive virus which has wiped everything from my hard drive. I've had to re-install my BT broadband and was advised to get AVG Free firewall. However, it interfered with my internet connection and made it really slow and wouldn't let me view any websites after about 5 minutes.
I've uninstalled it and now just have the windows firewall that came with the Service Pack 2 CD for Windows XP.
Is this enough? What firewall is compatable with BT Broadband? Is BT broadband any good at all? I'm getting p***** off with them big time, all they ever say when I phone up to ask them about it all they say is phone Microsoft, this is after waiting 20 minutes to get through or having to phone the national rate phone number to get through quicker.
What should I do guys?

AVG do not produce 'firewall' software!
There is a package out there which puts AVG Antivirus together with a firewall product (Kerio, I think). It is highly possible that firewall conflicts can arise.

AVG Antivirus (free) is constantly recommended and if installed should not conflict with XP.

Whether XP Firewall is enough is another question and I will leave to others.
I personally have Sygate Personal Firewall in addition to XP but find that I have to switch it off a lot.

Firstly i'd remember to post any problems on here before calling a National rate phone line. There's normally someone who can help you pretty quickly ;).

cgksheff is right about AVG only being an antivirus and i have never heard of it causing the problems you describe. Have you got any other antivirus software running too?.
The Windows firewall doesn't do a bad job of stopping hackers etc gaining access to you computer but it won't stop any viruses, trojans, malware etc sending signals back out from your computer. All these can be inadvertently downloaded very easily by you without your knowledge.
I would recommend Sygate personal firewall as well. I think the website is: www.sygate.com/firewall

Did you manage to retrieve the data on your HD?.

Are you running two Firewalls?

I have Norton Internet and have never had a problem with XP conflicts.
