View Full Version : Windows Movie Maker - Importing an .AVI Wont Work
Ok im gettin really really stressed here. Im trying to import some .avi video clips into movie maker 2 and i keep getting a error saying i dont have the codec installed. Ive looked all over the internet for the latest and oldest .Avi codecs, downloaded them etc, ive tried converting the files to Mpegs and other formats using converting software etc (which always fail or have an error during conversion ) and NOTHING WORKS. Yet the file will actually play in all my video software including Windows Media Player.
Please help. Ive had my heart set on making an Anime music video for the last week or so and i cant do it cos of this. And it took days to find and download the actual movie i wanted. :(

In Windows Explorer, right click on the AVI you're wanting to use, then select proporties. You should then get a tab on the newly opened box (can't remember what it's called, but it's next to the General one - which is selected by default;)). This should then tell you exactly which codecs were used to prepare the AVI.
Copy & Paste the name of the codecs into Google (between "QUOTES"). This should help you find the required codec.
Failing that, stick the name of the codec on here & I'll have a look in my collection of codecs.

I suspect you may have something installed which gives you this functionality. I certainly don't have it :(
Getting hold of a copy of Gspot (if you can find it - heh heh) is also an option if you don't have the 'right-click' functionality that sccsux mentions. This will give you the details you/we need.
Get GSpot at http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
You *may* need to convert from your current format to an intermediate format using something like VirtualDub before WMM2 will read it.
parrotface 23-02-2005, 16:12 The official line from the microsoft knowledge base is "The MPEG2 format has several codecs that are not supported by Windows Movie Maker. Even if you have downloaded and installed these codecs on your computer, files in the MPEG2 format may not work in Windows Movie Maker or may cause other problems'
Not sure if this will apply to avi files. but basically means 'not our problem' from our friends at Redwood

A standard, patched Windows 98 (+AV/FW/AS) install only;).

The FFDSHOW codecs from http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net are pretty good.
The install pack contains DX3/4/5, XviD, AC3 and MP3 codecs - All you should ever need to play/create DivX/Xvid.
alchresearch 23-02-2005, 20:02 Before you start editing your film on Windows Movie Maker it may be worthwhile having a look at Nero Vision Express. I use it on a professional basis every day and it's pretty decent.
i got the codec but im having another common error. ive managed to get my video in, but every so often it keeps saying the program has encountered an error and needs to close. help?
alchresearch 23-02-2005, 21:18 It doesn't matter if you have the codecs in, a DivX file doesn't like being edited in the usual proprietry video editors out there.
You'll need VirtualDub.
You may be better converting the DivX AVI back to an MPG or WMV until you've edited it. However, converting needlessly will introduce further loss of quality. Check out the DivX forums for lots of help and advice.
but i got the divx codec and now my first problem is sorted, i just often get this common app error :
"windows movie maker has encountered a problem and needs to close"
Whats the solution for this? I check out the tech details of the error and a temp file is included in it, but ive tried deleting all the temp files and it still happens, plus, the file it specifies isnt in my temp files
alchresearch 24-02-2005, 10:26 You didn't get the error at first because you didn't get the video in for it to crash - the missing codec was stopping you from loading in the video and seeing the second error.
Now you have the codec it's trying to read the format and crashing.
alchresearch 25-02-2005, 08:06 Try NANDUB instead of VirtuabDub, it corrects audio synchronisation problems with some DivX AVI's.
