View Full Version : Beckham omitted from England squad.

BasilRathbon 31-01-2008, 12:09 It's only a tinpot friendly - surely Capello could just give him 5 minutes to get his 100th cap then pull him off?
he can hardly help the season times of the country he plays in can he!!
Although im glad that capello is showing that he won't bow to media pressure-even though i still think he will give him his 100th cap at some point.
surely Capello could just give him 5 minutes to get his 100th cap then pull him off?:o Is that rather than oranges at half time
To be honest I think this is a case where there IS room for sentiment. I think the Germans organised a special friendly to give Uwe Seeler his hundreth cap for example. Its only a friendly.
He may yet include Beckham in a friendly squad in summer, when the guy has actually been playing some football recently.

Good news. I'm glad he isn't in the squad, as it shows Capello has no room for sentimentality by picking a player who hasn't played a game since October. The clear message seems to be 'you only play if you're worth picking'.
Hopefully he'll shake things up a bit more further.

I think it also has something to do with the standard of football in the MLS. Beckham didn't have to sign for a club in a league on a par with League One or the lower regions of the Championship.
cressida 31-01-2008, 16:03 I think he'll get his 100th cap eventually, Capello shouldn't succumb to pressure to play Beckham, he is the boss now
Surely Capello is building a England team for the future with younger players, so whats the point adding Beckham back in the team?.

Sentimentality ... and staving off media abuse. Mind you, he's going to get media abuse whatever he does, so why worry about that.

CHAIRBOY 31-01-2008, 18:36 Whose opinion did the BBC counsel on the 6pm news, none other than a Beckham-backing Bryan Robson?
Beckham would have had 100 caps by now had he not received red cards. Well done Capello is my view.
briggy1967 31-01-2008, 19:34 England have just failed to Qualify for Euros from a fairly easy group,it isnt time for sentiment its time to get things sorted, wether its a crappy little friendly or not doesnt matter.Beckham deserves 100 caps but only if he deserves to be in the squad, and at the moment he doesnt.
At last weve got a manager picking players on form and not reputation
At last weve got a manager picking players on form and not reputation
What form has Michael Owen got lately, or Wayne Bridge or Ashley Cole?
Very predictable squad - I bet McClaren would have picked 27 or so of the same squad.

o.k so if you dont pick Cole or Bridge who do you pick??? and what has Cole done wrong this season, besides shaggin a minger
Fair enough Owen isnt firing at the moment but hes only just come back from injury and you never lose quality and he is a quality forward
And do you seriously believe Mclaren would have had the balls to include
Agbonlahor
Upson
Davies
At least Capello had the nounce to include James and will probably regard him as his number 1 regardless of his age,Mclaren didnt even include him in his squads when he was playing out of his skin
It is a LONG way of a "very predictable" squad, anyone who thought he was going to leave out Lennon,Defoe,Beckham and bring in Agbonlahor,Davies and Curtis is a liar
All you've done is name three players McClaren might not have picked - like I said, McClaren would probably have picked 27 out of that 30 in his squad - including several who have shown no form whatsoever lately.
No radical change from Capello from what I can see - and a number of players picked on reputation rather than form.

i agree i think beckham should be in the team
Guderian 01-02-2008, 08:49 This is the early squad of 30, its trimmed down to 23 after Saturdays games.
Interested to see who fails to make this cut...

Go on what would you like him to do when you say radical take out Gerrard as he's not playing well by his standards at the moment. I'm sure Nigel Reo-Coker would love to take his place.
Good squad in my opinion.
But just think of the Beckham 100 merchandise! T-shirts, perfume, shaving gell, naughty undies,
Perhaps if he had come to cold wet windy England on his break, watched some football, done some training...
Perhaps if he had come to cold wet windy England on his break, watched some football, done some training...
Then he wouldn't be remotely anywhere near match fit. And - hey, look! - he isn't.

So basically you dont know who you would pick instead of Cole and Bridge,or do you just like repeating yourself???
And who are the players in the squad who you have been picked on reputation alone
Will give you Owen but several!!! dont think so
Agent Gypo 01-02-2008, 12:51 Perhaps if he had come to cold wet windy England on his break, watched some football, done some training...
He's been training with Arsenal.
NEKRO138 01-02-2008, 13:01 I'm very pleased to see Agbonlahor and Young in the side.
Gabi should start I think. He's got the best form out of any of the strikers.
Owen hasn't done anything to warrant being in this squad I'm afraid.
I think it's a good squad. I just hope Capello really goes for it and plays his form players, such as Bentley.
Woodgate looked very good on his Spurs debut too.
Guderian 01-02-2008, 13:25 He's been training with Arsenal.
Wearing Arsenal kit as well!
