Hi,

Whats the best way to go about getting a guaranteed listing in the top 10 of a google search when someone types in a related word? I have emailed them, I have a reply and they are on about a 'pay per click' which doesn't sound viable at all. What would anyone here advise, do I have to pay to get a'priority listing' I wouldn't mind paying but want it to be effective. Any help much appreciated.

Janey.

PPC gets you listed on the right of the results pages in the ad space. Do a search if you cant remember seeing them. The more you pay the higher you are displayed. There is no way to automatically get to the top of the results by paying. Take a look at http://www.webmasterworld.com in the Google news section for tips. You wont believe how deeply some people get in to optimising pages for Google.

There are also tips on Google itself in the about Google section under webmaster, I think.

Hope that helps.

Wow....

Just look up 'search engine optimisation' on Google - it's a whole world of it's own.

Pay Per Click is only worthwhile if you're willing to throw a lot of money at it OR if you're in a very small niche area of interest. And if you are in the latter then you'll probably get high ranking anyway.

First thing to do - get you site nice and neat and with a lot of content.

Second - avoid the people who will guarantee you top spots - they'll soemtiems try stunts that will actually get you barred from Google.

There are SEO specialists - but first, get your site working, get the links clean, use META tags, get the content sorted.

march - many thanks, I shall take a look at the site though here's hoping I understand what it's on about!

JoeP - I don't want to be listed on the right hand side of the page, I don't personally pay that much attnetion to the ones that are.

What are meta tags? I've only had a PC for a few months so don;t really undertand everything at the moment. I am using a template to build my site.

I have just had a look what meta tags are and found I can create some for free, as my site is currently being built do I have to wait till it's finished or can I create meta tags now?

Hi Janey,

Think it was March that mentioned the RHS listings - I'm like you - never pay any attention to the sites listed there.... :)

You can do the Meta tagging of pages as you go along - it's just part of the tagging in HTML.
