Has anyone noticed the amount of petrol stations, particularly near the city centre, that have closed in the last few years?
Some of them have been converted into car hand washing companies, some of them are being developed on (the Jet station on St Mary's Gate) while others have stood empty (the garage that was Eccelsall Road just passed Tesco or the BP garage that was near Wards Brewery).

I think its to do with the big supermarkets nearly all having their own filling stations, plus land being so valuable I can think of 3 filling stations near to me which are either flats and houses now or will be in the near future

Yes I thought it may have been because of the supermarkets offering lower prices, but then again supermarkets have been supplying cut price petrol for 10 - 15 years now, so why is it only recently that a lot pertol stations have closed down?
Well, Esso and Tesco struck a deal with the results been that Tesco get some of Esso's sites from which Tesco can sell their products but must sell Esso fuel but of course Tesco use their staff, part of this agreement is that Esso close some sites also I think. I think also another deal between Sainsbury's and Shell exists so this might mean more of the same happening. Of course Supermarkets cannot produce their own fuel anyway. They have to buy it from any of the oil companies to start with.

The real reason for the closing of so many petrol stations is because of EU regulation governing the underground tanks which store the fuel. THe cost of this can often be £100,000+ to replace each tank, and de-toxify the surrounding ground so only the very best (or newer) of the stations survive.
As for the stations on Eccy road, just up from Tescos its about time LSH took thheir board off it as I enquired about buying it a year or so ago to find it was then not being sold as the owner wanted to develop it (probably into a disused petrol station by the looks of it)

Yeah, I can't believe the site has stood empty for so long - the land must be worth a bit of money.
Wow.. Others have actually noticed this too huh?
I was talking to a friend the other day about it.. Quite a few petrol stations have closed down in my local area in recent years.. The "UK" stations on Woodseats and the one near Bishops House have closed and been demolished, the "BP" station at Meadowhead has recently closed and the "Texaco" station on Abbeydale Road closed some time ago. I think the Esso on Abbeydale Road has also closed now hasn't it..?
