purdyamos 30-01-2008, 19:52 For a while there were really distressing, desperate cries outside my flat that sounded like a baby. It was bizarre though, because I'd go out and try to locate this horrible human-sounding noise but just couldn't work it out or find its source. It was very unsettling to listen to and the agencies I phoned weren't much help. The fact that it went on for many cold nights sort of proved it wasn't a baby or it would have perished, but this sort of mystery is as the OP says, weirdly unsettling. Then one night I was walking past a tree outside my flat and the baby noise appeared directly over my head! What a pathetic sight! Amos Cat is now 13 and currently having sex with a woolly jumper on my bed - and not making baby noises while he's at it. :)
S8 Blade 30-01-2008, 20:51 I heard what sounded like an owl the other night - I couldn't tell you what night it was though - don't think it was Monday night. I couldn't tell if it was an owl, or if it was someone making that noise. Unsure of the time - all I know is I was asleep and it was very dark!
(note - ignore my username of S8 - I'm now S2)!

Have you become an owl yourself, too? :hihi:

The offspring will no doubt be extremely interesting :hihi:
gularscute 30-01-2008, 21:27 It could be foxes. They unleash some very disturbing, unearthly cries at night, like the sound of giant babies in distress.
gneighbour 30-01-2008, 22:20 I believe this is the time that owls will be looking for mates and hence calling, when I've heard it it's been a long mournful cry.
shaggydog333 30-01-2008, 22:25 thats a fox calling other foxes i hear it every other night wer i live and it sounds disturbing doesnt it?

FOXES
Foxes breed only once a year, most mating occurring in January or early February. Courting foxes can be heard uttering unearthly screams; the dog and vixen hunt and travel together for about three weeks before mating. The vixen looks for a suitable den or 'earth' - she may dig one under tree roots, or find a hole in a rock crevice, under a garden shed or even in a pile of rubbish.
A litter of four or five cubs is born after a gestation period of 53 days in March or April. They are blind, have round faces and short ears, and are covered with dark, chocolate brown fur.
The vixen stays with her cubs in the earth until they are two weeks old, relying on the dog fox to bring her food. The cubs grow quickly, their eyes opening when 10-14 days old. At around 4-5 weeks they begin to come out of the earth and their dark fur starts to change to red-brown. Non-breeding vixens in the family group may help the mother to rear her cubs. As the cubs grow up they play, squabble and fight amongst themselves. From as early as four weeks old they fight quite viciously - sometimes even to the death - and in this way they establish their social position.
Foxes are great - they cut down the rat population for humans.
