I have a 7/9 month old male kitten that we took in as a stray (still trying to rehome if anyone is interested) which has started to try and suckle from my own cat who has had kittens.
I have one male kitten still left to rehome (its 10 weeks old now) from my cats litter and although now eating solids is still suckling from its mother so the older kitten has started to join in too!
Until I have managed to find new homes for these two kittens does anyone have any suggestions? Although my own cat seems fine how long can she continue to do this for?
Thanks
She can (and might) continue to suckle the kittens indefinitely if you allow her to, but that will obviously delay when you can get her spayed, increasing the odds of her falling pregnant again before you can get her done.
It's a comfort thing (for both her and the kittens) and she may not actually be producing much, if any, milk for them. It's quite normal for kittens of all ages (up to about 19 or 20 years old) to suckle as a comfort thing with their humans too. Every time they paddle the inside of your elbow or dribble whilst nuzzling you it's connected to a 'mummy snuggle comfort' feeling for them, so nursing from a mummy cat, whether it's their mummy or not, is all part of the same thing.
Litters of kittens often suckle on each other's tummies and obviously get no milk from it but do get comfort and that's what's important. I also know of cats who suckle their humans' ears and of a kitten who suckled on the family's male dog and made his nipples so sore that they had to put plasters over them to allow them to heal!
It is in your mummy cat's interests if you can stop this happening for long enough for her milk to dry up so that she can be spayed, but other than this one issue, if everyone is enjoying the snuggle, what's the problem?
I'm sure it's a comfort thing too- we used to have a juvenile ginger boy who suckled on his much older tom-cat brother...

Thanks for that
My worry is that while she is still feeding its delaying me having her spayed and I dont want her to have anymore kittens. I am trying to keep her indoors as much as I can but when she hears the front door open she's off like a shot!

Things seem to be going okay. A couple of times my cat has spat out at the older kitten. Am I ok to let it continue to suckle?
If she's been outdoors then there is every chance that she's already pregnant again so I'd get her to a vet as soon as possible to check it out- they can do an emergency midline spay up to about 5 weeks to prevent back to back litters which are really bad for the mum's health.
As far as the disputes over her not wanting him to suckle- they'll sort it out in their own way and unless you're finding ears on the carpet afterwards I'd just let them get on with it. She's obviously making her opinion known and he'll get the message sooner or later.
