Thank you ! chefkicker 30-01-2008, 09:21 Does anyone know where i can take karate lessons in the City Center or some place around ? Thank you ! I know too places , dont know the exact location but am 100% sure you will get excellent karate tuition in both places. One place is an Okinawan Goju karate club, there is a guy called Price on here who teaches there. Im very impressed by their standards and overall ethics. The club is called sheffield hallam dojo The other place is run by a guy called Shotokarate, again high standards and good ethics. I am not impressed easily as many would know ;) but i have nothing but respect for these 2 clubs. Good luck! There are still a couple of people training there but it's far less formal than in previous years. Coz of family commitments (a 3 year old and 9month twins - busy busy busy!!!!) I can't get accross, so I'm training with Bob Hague in Hillsborough! Luckily, excellent club, and it's just round the corner to my house!!!! The Sheffield Hallam Dojo has moved to a unit just down from the Forum. Here's the link: http://www.hallamdojo.co.uk/ There's also a good Shukokai club at Ponds Forge - Barry Nash is the sensei there. mmmmm 30-01-2008, 12:20 What is Okinawan Goju like? Is it similar to any other styles and do they spar? DaFoot 30-01-2008, 12:29 http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6400504407 I've not yet managed to get along here so can't comment on standards, but fully intend to eventually! mmmmm 30-01-2008, 12:38 I cant get on facebook (blocked at work ) ShotoKarate 30-01-2008, 12:44 What is Okinawan Goju like? Is it similar to any other styles and do they spar? Goju means 'hard soft'. It describes the style practiced. AFAIK - There are 2 types of Goju: Goju Ryu - which originates from Okinawa and is associated with names like Higaonna (2 of them, but not related) and Miyagi - amongst many others. Goju Kai - which is regarded as a Japanese form of Goju, formed by Gogen Yamaguchi. I'm not sure of any differences between them other than the organisations that repressent each. I get the feeling I'm trying to show off with this post so I'll stop there as I'm no expert in Goju! DaFoot 30-01-2008, 12:53 .... as I'm no expert in Goju! More than most here, don't worry  chefkicker 30-01-2008, 17:47 Me neither, but from my academic research (i do stress the word "academic" ) i would say that Goju is very self defence orientated. The kicks are generally kept below waist level and there is a lot of kicking to the thighs and knee joints. It is very suitable for "smaller" people or even the elderly ;) Example, we once had a 64 year old gentleman turn up to one of our sessions and he is a 4th dan in Goju. He showed good spirit and did all the rounds that everyone else did with no complaint. I had a chat with him after wards and his mentality towards training was good. Definitely worth having a look at. ShotoKarate 30-01-2008, 20:01 Me neither, but from my academic research (i do stress the word "academic" ) i would say that Goju is very self defence orientated. Thanks for every one comment in my Thread price 30-01-2008, 21:46 Yes I know both places. The Hallam Dojo is up Trafalgar St opposite Devonshire Cat, on your left are some industrial units the Dojo is in one those units. I'm afraid I can't remember the number but just try the doors. The other is Norton Dojo, as the name suggests it's at Norton, Derbyshire Lane (see link on signature). Hallam does more sparring than Norton. In any event, as has been said, Goju-Ryu is very much self defence orientated so there isn't as much emphasis on sparring as happens with a lot of karate clubs. Defend and counter in as short a possible time using any technique, no rules at all. Chefkicker describes it pretty well.Try 'em both, but perhaps transport is an issue? chefkicker 31-01-2008, 14:41 Yes I know both places. The Hallam Dojo is up Trafalgar St opposite Devonshire Cat, on your left are some industrial units the Dojo is in one those units.
