View Full Version : The February 2008 Stashbusting Knitalong!

Lucy-Lastic

This is to remind everyone that we will be starting the new knitalong at the end of the week.

The idea of this one is:

1) To only use stash (so no sneeking off to Jills to get some yarn - or any other yarn selling establishment for that matter).
2) To knit an accessory or accessories (well something that can be finished within the month ideally). The original idea was for gloves but hats, scarves, socks etc are all ok.

Please post progress pictures here aswell as on blogs:D

Are we allowed to do finishing off stash busting? I've got a fair few projects that could do with being moved out of the wardrobe. I can assure you most of them are accessories. :hihi:

I'm gonna do a teddy....it's not strictly an accessory but in theory if I carried it round all day then it would be - so it fits into the accessory category :)

Sorry Lisa, I was in a hurry to get to my exercise class last night. I'm doing the glove pattern designed by Sue Morgan of GK - free with some sock yarn. I always print off a copy of the pattern so I can add my thinkings when working the pattern iyswim. They are just stocking stitch in self patterning yarn.

I like Elliboo bag though Hmmmm

I think thats the one I am doing too:) My pattern has 4 sizes Xs, S, M andL with XS for Ladies to L for men. Got to decide on size now - I have short fingers but am not sure whether my palm size is S or medium:roll:

....oh yes I forgot to say I like the look of Elliboos bag too:D

Lost the plot and had forgotten it was supposd to be a Feb knitalong and it is still only Jan...... I think it was being able to sit down at the meet that addled my brain! Could fit a Horace in during February :)

:wave:Hello

I am doing Fetchings and have come to an iffy bit. It's telling me to cast off using Cable Cast On method. I have looked on the tinternet, but cannot find any instructions. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? :help:

Oh, how embarrassing  CO means cast on, not cast off  I am used to calling it cast on and cast off. They say bind off and cast on. :o Glad to know it's their fault and not mine. Right, off to try and carry on now. Hey, I have nearly done one Fetching in one day! That was a quick knitalong :hihi:

I have finished my very first Fetching.

I did it on 4mm dpn's (this size used for the first time) and yarn that I bought from Texere Mills last year. It is Sunbeam St. Ives 4ply, but I have used a ball of black and a ball of grey together.

Here is the cuff: http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r65/Wheezy_photos/?action=view&current=DSCF4384.jpg

This is the Fetching without the thumb: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r65/Wheezy_photos/DSCF4391.jpg

And, here is the first one finished: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r65/Wheezy_photos/DSCF4400.jpg

The worst bit for me was the thumb. It terrified me to pick the stitches up above and below the red line. Somehow, I managed 8 on the bottom when it should have been 7 and 6 on the top, which was correct. Never mind, I knitted my rounds and cast off loosely.

I'm not looking forward to the second thumb. Is there a simple way of doing it? Would I have been better off pulling the red yarn out and then picking up the loose stitches? Why is it 7 on the bottom and 6 on the top?

What I'm wondering is, is it easy enough to do smaller and larger sizes?

I'm crocheting a scarf made from the edging motifs in this (http://www.knitrowan.com/html/magazines_slide_show.asp?productCode=ZM41&serial=70&slideSerial=631) pattern, and I'm going to use four balls of Rowan Classic Luxury Cotton DK in Fog.

I have made a mental note to be extra nice to you knitbird, ever since you mentioned your mafia connections. :suspect: What I thought was, if I could do a thumb on these here Fetchings, then I could do four more thumbs (fingers to you) and make a complete glove. BUT, I didn't like doing the thumb, it was scary. I don't like seeing holes, especially great big ones, in a piece of work. I don't know if it was more good luck than judgement that got that thumb where it is today. Anyway, I am up to the thumb on number two now, but have decided to call it a day and will finish it off in the morning. Hopefully delivering to my sister in the afternoon. What a good sister I am.

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/2239335677/?rotated=1&cb=1202069037821)is what my first glove looked like before the meet on Wednesday.

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/2239335245/) is what it looks like now:)

I have made it using Araucania Ranco Multy and am very pleased with the way the verigation comes out:) I have also been using my Harmony dpns and they are an absolute dream to use.

The only change I have made so far is that my palm is obviously a lot shorter than Sue Morgans so I stopped knitting a bit short before starting the little finger. There also seems to be a little ommission on the pattern for when you get to the middle finger as it seems to forget to tell you to cast on 2 stitches to close the gap between the middle and index finger (it tells you to pick up 2 over the gap between the ring and middle like I expected though). I have been weaving in the ends as I go along so you cant see the little holes left between the fingers - they werent enormous but they were there so I just tidied them up.

The glove looks good, I like the way that the fingers don't look noticeably different from the hand even though the rounds are much smaller. I made myself a pair with yarn that striped and the fingers looked nasty. (I wore them anyway though because they fitted so well)

I've finished the second fetching, the cast on edge and the picot bind off on the second glove look much better as they are a bit tighter, but I have a ladder down the thumb :(, which I didn't get on the first one.

I'm afraid I'm not doing them on dpn's but have got a pattern for doing them flat and then stitching up the edge.

Oooh Lisa thats lovely! Which pattern are you using?

I've just finished my first sock (currently sewing in the ends) and will put up a pic soon. It really is a stash busting one - The toes heels and cuff are made from plain opal (in stash) and the leg and foot are made from off shoots of another sock. I do have to admit that I have had to buy another ball of Regia Ringels to finish it off, but it should be enough to make a few pairs of baby socks too.

Hey - well spotted! I would have bought more but the husband was grumbling cos we were supposed to be going some where else and I had dragged him in there!! It was going to be socks, I think!

It was the shape of the balls that gave it away :D They do have some nice things in there don't they? You will have to go when you have more time. Did you go in the potting sheds?

What do you think of the yarn, because I know it says 4ply on the bag but there is no ball band is there? When I knitted socks with it on 2.5mm, it felt a bit thick and stiff.

You have all been very industrious. Well done Wheey for cracking on with the hat - it looks great. Can't believe the speed at which these gloves are appearing! For a lacy bit of nothing W4B, that is quite something.
I have finished my one and a half pairs tonight................glove no. 2 went with the binman this morning. It was perfect in every way provided your left thumb grew from the middle of your hand...... must not knit when very very tired....
am sick of waiting for camera but have the feeling it may appear soon as daughter no.3 wants me to sell some stuff on ebay for her. This means she needs to take photos and then I have to transfer them to my laptop :D

I did another 10 rows of rib just now (on the glove) - it took forever and I swear it hasn't grown any! :o By the looks of it, I think I need to do another 20 rows in rib for the cuff to look anything like a cuff:(

Managed to do 10 rows in the foot of my sock though, only another 32 (and counting) to go and then it's all down hill with the toe.

I have just finished the gussett (sp?) on my first ever glove. It was easy enough, although I have ended up with a couple of small holes on one side of the increase. First time I've used stitch markers too and they were easier than I thought they'd be.

I have 60g left out of a 100g skein. Looking at my rainbow socks they took 61g so if I do shorter legs I should be ok:D

I have finished the baby top but sent it down south before I took a picture. Have turned the heel on the second Jaywalker sock. HAve nearly finished allof the bits of one Horace bear. The yarn is so nice . It is from Yarnsmiths - in the States - and is a blend of alpaca and cashmere. There should be enough to knit an elephant in the grey as well.

Baby top was terrific, and the alpaca/cashmere is perfect for a bear - I guess one looks less odd to the rest of the world hugging a bear than a ball of yarn as they may not understand or appreciate the loveliness of alpaca/cashmere!

I finished my gloves 2 weeks ago! I will get round to posting a picture. In the meantime I have been waving them around every time someone from the Forum comes in the shop!
