View Full Version : Why can't I log out?
Has anybody else had this problem?
When I try to logout I get the message that cookies have been cleared but when I go back to the home page it tells me that I'm still logged in. I can't seem to get out.
I have asked the site admin and was offered the following gem of advice
No idea! :S

Can anybody be more helpful?
Why would you want to log out of this wonderful forum?
Well the cookies obviously haven't been cleared, but that shouldn't be a SF problem that I have come across before (willing to be corrected).
Mo, maybe it's worth doing a bit of maintenance like clearing the cache and stored files? Might help. I know my XP sometimes has a mind of its own.
Does anyone know of any other technical reasons?
fnkysknky 22-02-2005, 15:40 It happens a lot - as far as I'm aware what happens is you log out and a guest session is created for you but because you still have the cookie with the username and password on your pc it logs you back in with it. Stupid I know but only way I've found of getting round it is to manually delete cookies :suspect:
Seen it happen on other vBulletin sites as well.
fnky's suggestion of deleting cookies is the way to go.

At the risk of sounding dim.... How?
(now that I'm having the same problem all of a sudden :suspect: )
Found it
and it worked
I know this thread is old but I finished at a job yesterday, and needed to make sure that I was logged out of the forum completely on the office computer.....it was then I realised that I had to click the No box in Your Options, where it asks if you want to remain logged-in to SF permanently.
That, of course, is as well as deleting cookies and history.
Ahhhh, could that have any bearing on the problem some users are having with finding they are logged in as somebody else?
There's a thread somewhere, but I can't think of any keywords, though Classic Rock was having the problem.
This one? http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63222&highlight=cant+log+off.
I found it when I was searching for this thread:wink:
I can get onto this site without logging in, and i can log out a hundred times and I'm still logged in.
Any one else had this happen?
Saves the hassle of logging in but as a consequence it looks as though I'm on here all the time, with no life outside of this forum!
I don't know but i've had a few of the reply pages stretch way too wide on me tonight, meaning i'm having to scroll sideways to check what i've typed :?
Try "Internet Options" under 'Tools' and clear all cookies.
(This is a good thing to do on a regular basis)
(P.S - I learned that from Vidster's helpful website. Sorry, no link)
That's because it's still not rebuilt Deavon  I'm still waiting to get my notebook back with all the software on it.
Here's (http://dhost.info/vidster/HTML/) what i have done so far.
"Page cannot be displayed"???
I like it!
It's simple.
I reckon it could catch on...
 It's working for me
Try another page...

Sorry Vidster, I can't get anything.
(At work, if we have any tech problems we phone a premium rate number (that puts us on hold for... oh say 5 to 15 minutes), and the advice is always the same: "Can you see a large black lead that looks like a Kettle lead?" 'Yes.' "OK... Pull it out and then put it back in." 'Yes. OK'. "Is it working?" 'Yes.' ... Unfortunately I don't have a 'kettle lead' on this one.)
Perhaps I will be able to follow the links tomorrow when my computer is fresh?
yeah i've had that happen before vidster aswell and it just corrected itself, cos you can correct that by going into tools > font size aswell. and i've cleared all cookies files and loadsastuff and the loggin problem's still there deacon, so next think i'll have to contact forum webmaster. thanks all though.. :)
I couldn't get onto vids pages either - both not working for me.
puzzled why this keeps happening to me, it doesn't happen with any other sites, good job too.
 I just tried it in Internet Explorer and it doesn't work!!
Holy crap! I can see me asking for some help on this one :(
Until then, it's just open to people with a browser that works like Firefox :P
ToryCynic 14-11-2005, 01:38 No - it doesn't work in FF, either! - :S
:)
Internetowl 14-11-2005, 07:06 it seems ok to me - just been in - looks ok so far ;)
OK....
Logging out.
When you log out of the site there does seem to be a period of time when you still appear to be logged in, if you look at the list of logged in members. This is due to there being a period of time between you logging out and the software next updating the list to be displayed.
However, there are some occasions when clearing the cookies is required.
With regard to the wide page problem, this happens after you've viewed a posting that has some additional formatting in. There is a bug in this version of vBulletin with some browsers that sometimes causes formatting to be screwed in these situations. It will usually clear itself if you close down all instances of the browser. However, if you hit the same formatted text again, the same thing will happen.
As for Vidster's site, that's DEFINITELY nothing to do with us! :)

It will also happen when some fool puts in a load of text or dots without spaces, like this .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .....
There is even one member whose signature causes (or used to cause) this problem.
