View Full Version : Chavs - Tonight on Sky One
If anyone with Sky TV cares, there's a programme on Sky One tonight at 9 PM.
I personally won't be watching, because contrary to popular belief I do NOT have an obsession with chavs and chavdom, nor AM I one....
Might TIVO it though to watch another time, there's just something else on at 9 that I want to watch.
You little fibber you :P
Won't be watching, still no TV Cable/Ariel in my room

Shut up.
I realise you're only messing but I'm getting a little tired of people branding me a chav in the chat etc lately.
I do not own anything burberry, real, fake or otherwise, I don't do anti-social behaviour and I don't wear jewelry.
I watched it. Don't think I've ever responded to a 'chav' thread in the past and I hate the word.
The programme I found strange, Julie Burchill is not my idea of a good presenter.
I felt the programme was unfounded, biased and contradictory.
Some of what was said, about people who aren't 'chavs' I found to be incredibly stupid. Much as some must be offended by being called 'chav'.
What did everyone else think of the programme?
Is it accurate? Did it agitate you? Are you 'chav' or distinctly otherwise?
WallBuilder 21-02-2005, 22:36 I must admit I was watching the other side but kept on hopping across during the adverts to catch miniscule amounts. I got the impression that they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel to make a documentary on a very uninteresting topic. I noticed Vanessa Phelps was being asked her opinion and had to wonder again 'how on earth is that woman on so many programs'? The few 'chav' featured that I saw were absolutley nothing to aspire to become or want to have anything to do with.
msbehavin 21-02-2005, 22:51 I watched it. was quite amusing though Im not sure that it was intentionally funny.
Must admit to being disturbed by the scene in which Vanessa Feltz and Julie Burchill sit opposite each other at a table discussing 'chavdom'. Have got a mental picture in my mind now that I cant get rid off - have seen some scary horror films in my time yet none left such a chilling image as those two harridans bickering to each other...... (shudders)
No matter what the subject was if that dreadful woman Julie Burchill was presenting it I wouldn't watch.
She has such an annoying voice, and even when she wrote for the music mags years ago she seemed to write to impress or annoy rather than write to impassion or enlighten.
Her very presecnce fronting a show that supported the 'Chav' culture reminded me that Chavness is something that must be destroyed before it takes over the world.....or is it too late?
Joe :)
DaBouncer 22-02-2005, 07:24 What was she on about?
CHAV's are working class? That's a right load of b****cks.
CHAV's are anti-social, street drinking thugs that can be from any age.
The word or meaning of CHAV doesn't even fit in the same category as the working class, these people 9 times out of 10 don't even f****** work.
She was talking as if the media portray CHAV's under the same heading as the working class. How stupid.
I'm working class, so is my family. We aren't chavs in the slightest.
I'm telling you that woman with her stupid annoying voice and her trying to be one of you crap talks out of her backside.
Lickable 22-02-2005, 09:22 I hated the way they tried to include a Chav history, and decided to include the Small Faces in with it.
What is the UK turning into? I have to get out!
Well thank **** for that, I had a horrible feeling that I would be on my own on this one.
It sounds like everyone is of the same opinion.
I could'nt agree more with Zebra and DaBouncer posts!
I actually started to feel quite guilty for being white, unconfrontational, respectful, working, taxpaying ect..... human being. Very silly.
Also did I perceive it right that Julie Burchill was actually trying to make out that she was a chav.
Even if chav is the same as working class (which we all know is'nt) I some how doubt it.
She's actually quite popular it's incredible.
StarSparkle 22-02-2005, 10:09 At the risk of repeating myself from another thread, Julie Burchhill recognises herself in chavs because she has no class.
She had none back in the late 70s when she 'wrote' for the NME and nothing has changed since then.
I've never been able to stand the woman, and would take everything she says with more than a pinch of salt.
StarSparkle :gag:
Cheltenham Average is one theory of where the name came from.
I could not think a worse programme to watch.
When I skipped on to it by accident I saw Vanessa Phelps for about 10 seconds before switching off.
The irony of scum talking about scum.
to be working class is not to be a chav.
But is the opposite true? Can you get middle class chavs? (Maybe Can you is the wrong question, DO you is probably more important).
Just found another `Council House And Violent`
Who gives gives a sh*t.
Basically Julie Burchill is getting the reaction she wanted.
Her whole career has been based on annoying people and she knows she's getting the reaction. Worst thing is people know that's what she's doing, but still get wound up by her.
I watched "the real little Britian" on BBC3 instead....it highlighted people who were similar to little Britain characters.
It was mildly amusing, although I suspect somewhat staged.
on_the_edge 22-02-2005, 16:29 i watched it too, thought it was a right pile of bobbar.
its on again on sky one mix, tonight.
CSI is on 5 at 9pm
guess which channel i'll be watchin??:P
Chavs,Sky one, Sky one remix has just reminded me of why I cancelled Sky, no longer do I pay to the Murdoch empire.
I never mentioned you once Rich :P
evildrneil 23-02-2005, 15:09 Did anyone else see this fairly awfull programme on Sky on Monday (or Sky Mix yesterday)? If so what was your opinion? I found it shallow and Ms Birchill herself a terrible presenter - unwilling to listen to anyone she was supposed to be interviewing / talking to. Add to that her apparent oppion that it is quite all right to offend / takew the p*ss out of the middle and upper classes but anyone daring to say anything negative about the working classes is guilty of bullying and harassment doesn't seem to make her an even remotely stable or impartial social comentator?
Was this the same programme Rich started a thread on? (link here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30136))
evildrneil 23-02-2005, 15:21 It was indeed - why didn't that show up in a search - I shall now run off and merge threads and wear sackcloth and ashes for then next week!

Added to that,.....the gormless cow isn't aware that 99.99999% of working class folk can't stand or tolerate the bone idle, foul-mouthed antisocial chav culture.
And that's because working class has the word 'work' in it.
noseyrosie 23-02-2005, 23:32 Course you can get middle class Chavs. Tapton school is full of them.
Case studies:
1) Gormless spoilt designer brat - can actually afford the genuine Burberry, but prefers Von Dutch, Diesel, Ugg boots and hair extensions/fashion mullets. Gets a new car on turning 17. Wealthy upbringing has left them with no value of money, and subsequently no respect for the world at large, and apathy for anything meaningful. Listens to dance music and anything in the clubs.
2) Platinum Landrover Mum - identifiable by silk fake nail extensions, hair extensions, and expensive designer twin sets. Like shopping in M&S's Per Una range. Bleached hair seems to have disintegrated and regard for other peoples lives when it comes to driving down Fulwood Road - will stop at nothing to park outside their little darlings' prep school.
Hmm that's all I can think of for now...

It is altough a relative example of bad choice and taste IMO.
Yodameister 24-02-2005, 09:20 Julie Burchill's problem with this is she has a hatred of the "middle classes" just as much as anyone has a hatred of "chavs".
She is often entertaining in what she writes because it is so forthright, but she is nowhere near as clever as she thinks she is.

And the worst thing it is quite obviously a hatred bourne out of jealousy - all her "i got where I am today through my own hard work I didn't have it handed to me" smacks to me of jealousy for anyone who did have any slightly more privilaged upbringing.
And she may be entertaining - but it is akin the entertainment you get from watching a frothing bigot tie themselves up in their own skewed views and "logic"!
