Would anyone like some stick insects as pets? Due to a population explosion we have far too many and are looking to rehome some. All they need is an old fish tank with a secure lid, a bit of privet, thats it!
Please note I am offering these as pets, they are not food!!!

You too.....I also have a population explosion.

Mine are in a tank but the lid is not that secure and although the big ones can't get out am finding little stickies all over the place....:D

Have managed to re-home some of them....

Curious little creatures aren't they. :D

OOH I might be tempted! I used to have stick insects and still have a privet hedge for snacking on... (even had a jar at work at one point). Now, where did I put that huge glass jar with the metal mesh lid.

If you have more than one stick insect do they breed indiscriminately?

Male sticks are very rare, most are female and they lay eggs that will hatch without a male, hence the population explosion. The advice from the rspca is to humanely destroy the eggs before they get a chance to hatch, I only had 3 sticks and so I let the eggs hatch, I won't be doing that again!!

Having got the 'bug' again, Ive been looking on evilBay and was suprised to see so many different varieties of stick insects (and other insects/bugs/arachnids)t for sale (as 'live food' to get around the issue of selling pets, hmmmmm) I only ever had the common Indian sticks, but there are some wierd and wonderful ones around, not so bothered about the huge, lumpy or winged ones, especially anything that bites, sprays noxious chemicals or has fully functioning wings - not a good idea with a houseful of cats!

So, are there any stick or leaf enthusiasts out there and any suggestions where other than eBay I could acquire a selection of similar sticks (that would survive on the more common bramble, privet, rose or oak diet - and be a variety of sizes/ hues), that could live together in a tall glass and mesh tank (looking at an exo terra because that should be sturdy and suitably cat-proof)

Well, looks like I've found some baby sticks now and fingers crossed they'll be winging their way to me shortly (hopefully not literally_ I didn't fancy a flying one!), couple of Indians, guadeloupes, parapachymorphas and 2 Black Beauties (very wierd velvety black ones with tiny flightless red wings and bright yellow eyes!). All compatible and none so scary that I'll have nightmares thinking about them!

But whilst investigating housing on Monday, we happened to visit Snakes and Adders at Intake (another great reptile store)and (oops) came out with an exo terra terrarium and a Praying Mantis...That Chaz Thompson is a blooming good salesman, I can tell you!

Coming to terms with feedling her ('Millie', almost certainly female if I've read the blurb correctly on the web) live locusts was a challenge, (first feed last night, talk about throwing the christians to the lions, I felt really bad about it and keep apologising to larry the locust's little brothers...) but she is a character.

Just got to keep her well clear of the new 'sticks' when they arrive - oh and Alfie the barmy bengal - he's already clocked the new arrival and keeps trying to tell me there's a big scary bug that needs sorting out...

just got to guarantee a steady supply of bramble now - privet is no problem, mountains of the stuff, but looks like I'll be scrounging in the woods til we can get some established at the end of the garden
