Lickszz   10 #1 Posted February 25, 2003 Back in the day this was supposed to be a 5 star hotel. It was Sheffield's finest premier hotel but to look at it now you see a wreck of a building that looks dirty and run down. It's not just the outside either, the inside is just as bad and I feel the place has really gone downhill. Question is why have they let this once notorious hotel deteriorate so badly? richard   10 #2 Posted February 25, 2003 The richest man in the Country the Duke of Westminster, or Lord Grosvenor, isn't that concerned about this one hotel probably. He's raking it in, he owns most of Chester and large parts of London, probably many other places as well. He's not going to care about this one hotel, assuming Lord Grosvenor still owns the hotels of that name.
 Share this content via...
Michael_W Â Â 11 #3 Posted February 25, 2003 Used to go to the Grosvenor back in the early 80s when the mother in law used to sing there, seen quite a few celebs in there over the years but that was when Sheffield had fewer hotels. I don't know the room prices, but the bar prices were always a bit steep.
 Share this content via...

halevan   11 #5 Posted February 26, 2003 Yes, he is the richest man in this country, with an income of £500 per second, however, whichever Duke happen's to hold the title he is only the keeper of the fortune, not allowed to spend the lot ( even if he could. ) It all started with William the conqueror, who gave his general's vast tract's of land, as there reward for helping him to take this country over. alchresearch   213 #6 Posted March 1, 2003 A work colleague stayed there recently and as she described the decor, it was obvious it hasn't changed since the 80's and the smell of stale tobacco was awful.  Most major cities have a Travel Lodge or Travel Inn in the city centre. Cheap, clean, modern chain of hotels. It's a shame they can't get hold of it and do it up. Those places are great to stay for a weekend break. I've used the ones in Newcastle, Leeds and Cardiff and had a great stay.
 Share this content via...
Michael_W Â Â 11 #7 Posted March 1, 2003 Got to agree with alchresearch, the Travel Inn and Travel Lodges are good value. Have stopped in quite a few and no complaints, try booking the one in Blackpool you can never get in because it's better value than most of the grotty b&bs there. JonHarrison   10 #8 Posted March 4, 2003 Unfortunately the Grosvenor is badly run down and needs to be pulled down.  The interior is old, ugly and not a good example to tourism. The rooms smell, are badly in need of redecoration.  A forward thinking company needs to take this whole site and plan something on a grand scale. The situation lends itself to a new 1st class hotel with mall underneath. With a bit of forward thinking by all with an interest in this land/buildings etc they can make money and also get a better hotel in the city. alchresearch   213 #10 Posted March 4, 2003 The hotel with mall idea is a good one. Check out this site:  http://www.lowrydesigneroutlet.com/index2.htm  and then click on 'photos'.  This is a new development in Salford, is a really high quality mall with hotel and residential apartments above.  Something like that would really draw in visitors. David   10 #11 Posted March 5, 2003 I thought everyone knew about this, but you don't so i'll tell you!! The Hotel is now owned by a company call Hammersons, they are the partners in Sheffield's new retail quarter. The hotel, car park and surrounding shops are due to be pulled down and new double height shops are due to be built.  Hopefully, then we won't need to look at it for much longer!! That is why the hotel smells and looks grotty, no one wants to spend any money on it!  Look at this website for more info.  www.sheffield1.com
 Share this content via...
