Bluetooth (named after some Scandinavian king) is a wireless communication standard that many manufacturer's agreed to. Essentially, a cheap way of connecting devices together across short distances (10 metres or so).
As you've noticed, the most common application is in mobile phones whereby a Bluetooth chip allows it to communicate to a wireless headset. You'll probably have seen people driving with little Borg-like things on their ears - that's a Bluetooth headset. It means the phone can be in your pocket and when it rings you tap the headset and you can speak as normal.
There are many other applications of Bluetooth e.g. some cordless mice, allowing PDA's to talk to PC's.
Hope that helps.

right i think i get it. But if you don't drive why would you want it? when else could it be of any use?

it's a generic protocol, any device that might need to commuicate over a short distance can use it. Thus I can syncronise my phone without having to worry about cables (with my pc that is) and i can transfer files between pc and laptop without connecting them upto the network (only needed to do this once though).

It lets electronic devices communicate with each other with out wires over short distances. your laptop and mobile could talk to each other for example, or your mobile and headset..

or your keyboard and computer, or your camera and printer, or your headset with your computer or...or...

It's flaky, but improving.

Basically, in the case of mobiles, You could send a text to someone on the bus without even having the number on your phone, or send them a picture, ringtune or whatever. Its just used to communicate wirelessly with most types of technology.

thats of course assuming that you have set up both devices to talk to each other. i know that you can set devices to allow open access but that is just asking for trouble

or asking to make new friends/flirt www.mobiluck.com

There's no known, genuine, in-the-wild harmful files/viruses that can be sent via Bluetooth and you have to accept the incoming file on most devices so there's not too much trouble to be had.

I love Bluetooth. Ive bought a bluetooth USB dongle £17 to transfer from my mobile on to my pc or visa versa. Also can share files from phone to mates that also have bluetooth free of charge. Pictures can be printed off via Bluetooth at the kodak kiosk in Boots High street.
When I upgrade my mobile hand set I definitely must have bluetooth. Yes I am a Bluetooth freak.

Ever since I got my K700i, bluetooth has been the best feature on it.

Bluetooth is great for recieving unwanted and usually disgusting bits of video onto your mobile without even knowing it.. . . one of my friends was in a nightclub and someone on the dancefloor near him must have been sending out the video which appeared on his mobile.

:P modern technology eh!

Bluetooth is best for creating my own mp3s and uploading them as ringtones :)
Still not found any decent software for transferringmultiple files/ backing up my addressbook etc though (Motorola 500)
