My daughter left Meersbrook Bank last year, was so sad to leave, a lovely friendly school, very caring. I'm sure they'll be happy to show you around.

Added to that she came away very confident, loads of friends and fab SATS results, the only downside to it is Newfield is the feeder school, but there are other choices of secondary school.....

Don't know if Anne's Grove is S2 or S8? Anyway, it's Heeley!

It's turned itself around from being a failing school academically to being one of Sheffield's best! Nice new buildings too. And it's got a strong anti-bullying policy and apparently the kids are all very friendly with one another and happy - I know a few families who send their kids there and they love it.

Have you checked with your postcode what choices you have in S8? different addresses have different catchment schools...

Abbey Lane had a good rep but Greenhill has grass, depends if you think you have a budding sportsperson

My two went to Carfield. Its a few years ago now, but it was a great school. The current Head was the Deputy Head when we were going there so I would imagine its still a good school

My neighbour's daughter went to Abbey Lane and her parents were happy with that school.

I went to Carfield too, made a lot of friends and had good friends, hated a certain two teachers... Left and went to Newfield (which, by the way, isn't as bad as the rumours say.)

Mt grandkids are at Mundella, as were many of our firends' kids, and it seems to be excellent. I've met some of the staff, and they seem very dedicated.

Phone Primary Admissions on 2735766 and they should be able to give you an idea of which schools in your area have places.

A couple of things to consider when choosing a primary school, like Twitcher above said check on Sheffield Council website as your catchment may mean your child could end up in a school which would not feed to the secondary to which most school friends would go (this has just happened to my neighbour and her daughter is very upset, as none of her friends are going to her secondary school).

Would you need to use a breakfast or after school club ? Abbey Lane doesn't have these, but Woodseats does which might sway your decision.

Both my sons went to Woodseats and they were very, very happy there the staff are great.

Having looked at the OFSTED reports, the average scores for each area are:

Mundella - 2
Woodseats - 2
Abbey Lane - 1 or 2
St Thomas of Canterbury - 2 or 3
Norton Free - 3
Meersbrook - 3
Carfield - 2
Holt House - 1
Carter Knowle - 3
Abbeydale - 2

Holt House is on Bannerdale Road in S7, but it looks a good chice.

EDIT: Seems Holt House only caters for kids aged 5-7...

Carter KNowle and Abbeydale are also S7

Other S8 schools include Lowedges and Lower Meadow

You do really need to check with school admissions to see which school is in the catchment area for your address.......as you can't "always" have "your choice" of school, if there are sufficient places in your catchment school.

My understanding is its not about whether there are places in your catchment school or not. Its about whether there are places in the school you are applying for.

If a school is full the Council/school will almost certainly not offer you a place (there are some really narrow exceptions) regardless of whether your catchment school is full or not. Likewise if the school you want has places then you can have a place even if your catchment school also has places.

If the school you want is full you can appeal for a place to an independent appeal panel but if it is an infant place you want (Reception Year 1 or Year 2 even in a primary school) then I understand the grounds for appeal are quite narrow.

I went to Mundella and had an awesome time, it really was a fantastic school. Then again I left when Andy Birkby did so I'm not sure what the new head is like. Think she's pretty good though. I would strongly recommend it. ;)

I wouldn't say it is one of Sheffield's best but it certainly has improved over the last few years. It's in S2 by the way.

We were gonna move to the S8 area at the begining of the year but changed our minds upon finding that no schools in the S8 area had any places for a year 1 student. And I mean none we checked every one of those that has been mentioned and was told that it was a very popular year group. When it came down to my 3 year old and a nursery place they all had a place but it would mean one child either being late in the morning or being picked up late at the end of school.

The other thing is that primary admissions at the council told us that at primary school age it is not based on catchment area so much as it is for secondary school.

This is why the closest school we could get our child into was 15 minutes by car, 30 minutes by bus (2 buses) if it was a case of straight off one bus straight onto another or 40 minutes walking. Now I don't drive and if we got the bus it would have meant waiting quite some time for a connecting bus so we would have been late everyday so we would have had to walk but I think 40 minutes walk for the kids to get to school is a bit excessive.

Because some parents are really snobbish about where they want to send thier kids to school!

A lot of parents think that the "name" of the school, and also not one on a counsil estate, will provide a better education....and it will mean they can "keep up with the jones's!"

Sad but true!

I think you will find for some of us it has more to do with the performance of a school rather than being snobbish.
Have you actually read any of these schools Ofsted reports, some don't make good reading:o
What is wrong in wanting to secure a good education for your child, rather than sticking them in the first school with an available place?

You must have not checked woodseats primary school then cause they do!!

Woodseats primary was the 4th school i checked out and was told by the staff in no uncertain terms that there were no places in year 1 and my child would not be able to attend. Maybe you should go check the numbers for the the term starting January 09. I was told I could go on a waiting list but with no schools in the area willing to take him due to being full he'd have spent a lot of time not at any school whilst waiting for a place.

They have space I have just been involved with gaining a childinto this school , thery told us last week they had space in year 1 , reception and year 3 hope that helps.
However Iwouldn't send my children there , \Iwould recomend St Thomas's of Canterbury as their pastoral care is good whenthe family has problems oreven if not , the school has a loving ethos and all the children I have nanied for have been through this school , then birkdale or brantwood.he last child to leave last summer now attends All Saints catholic high and you don't have to be catholic to attend.

They have places now, this was back in January, we were going to move from Nottinghamshire. At the time there was no chance of getting him in there or anywhere else. Primary admissions said i could appeal but if there were no places then it'd be a waste of time.

Now do you all want to go check the figures and stop making out that i'm lying?

Both abbey lane and Woodseats had places in January as Abbeylane lost 4 pupils as our Vicar left :( but I know when my friend enquired she was told there was no places and yet she knew there was !!!! Education officers weren't upto date.

Star_sprinkl

At the moment the Education Officers can only give you an indication of places other than in Reception and Year 7 because schools manage their own admisisons in those years (I believe that you can apply via the Local Authority but this will be sent on to the school). This will change in coming years as they will co-ordinate all admissions to every year.

In terms of the schools saying they are full it is possible that as soon as places become available someone took them up. Likewise they could say they are full and then have someone leave the next week.

It was the staff at the schools not the education officers who gave me the information.
