I am researching my family tree. Most of my relations lived in or around the same district and I am interested in seeing just how close together their dwellings were, but some of the addresses don;t exist any more on modern maps.

Does anyone know if you can buy copies of old street maps or if they are available to view on line.

(NB: researching NEEDHAM, LOCKETT, ROBERTS, WEBSTER, HALL)

Alan Godfrey (http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/sheffield.htm) publishes reprints of Ordnance Survey maps, mostly c 1900/1905. I use some of them so much they fall apart and I have to buy new ones. You can buy them at Sheffield Scene (Surrey St), Waterstones, and probably other places.

If you can get to the Local Studies Library when it reopens after its redecoration (next week I hope) they have a big collection of old maps.

Now all I need to do is find where abouts Orley Street was at the turn of the century...

You can find Kelly's 1901 Directory of Sheffield at this site (http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/b1.asp) - there is no Orley Street listed . Could you mean Morley St?! The listing for Morley Street is on page 304.

Morley St runs from Walkley Lane to Walkley Bank Road.

Hugh in Walkley

Or possibly Hawley Street, runs from bottom of Broad Lane to Campo Lane, it might possibly classed as Nether Hallam, and it's in the old complex of streets near West Bar so was probably there and residential at the turn of the century?

Just had a look at the 1903 map and hawley Street is there, looks like terraced houses.
And on mojoworkings 1890 map.

Not sure, the census sheet seems to clearly show Orley and not Morley or Hawley.. I suppose the person recording the census may have got this wrong???

Thans for your help guys, I'll check out the links you have posted.

yes you can purchase maps from all times,,well before the times you need to research, however the hard part is that you first must contact doc emmet brown from the back to the future films and book his time machine then simply go back and by it in the local shop, hut whatever was there. hey no need to thank me for my assistance its all part of the job.

Try this one. It has maps of various areas of Sheffield between 1850 and 1900. Select Gazetteer and then Yorkshire and you can select from the districts of Yorkshire listed alphabetically including Sheffield for central Sheffield, Walkley, Hillsborough etc. are all listed separately.

I am tracing my family and they used to live on Arley Street, do you think that this is the street you are looking for.

You can check where the family is living by looking at the old Electoral registers in the Local Studies on the 1st floor of the Central Library.

They have them on micro fiche, the staff there are very helpful and will put you right if you ask.

Do remember that as Sheffield grew the Electoral areas change, one change was in 1901 when some addresses were taken from the Ecclesall Bierlow to the Heeley register.

Hope this info helps you

Happy Days!

Old Maps

I bought a few of the old Ordnance Survey maps of Sheffield and had them laminated.

They came out great, they do not deteriorate through constant folding and unfolding and they are so clear to read through the laminate.

The only drawback is their storage but I keep mine in an art folder.

Hope this info helps

Happy Days!

Hi
The web site clickhere.org.uk has an interactive map of sheffield in 1935 25 inchs to a mile where you can post stories, pictures, video and audio clips to any point on the map. The site is maintained by our team at PACES centre in High Green.

We are also running a free afternoon course from the 13th January 1pm to help anyone who wants to research family and local history. We have a fast broadband and it will be a freindly and cosy afternoon.

The site also has a searchable 1881 census with a cumulative search facility. Our members are currently researching many of the big houses in Sheffield and listing the residents and their occupations.

Well you wouldn't find it on the 1780 map :D

Montford road ran between Rock street and Nottingham street - a little closer to town than Andover street. I see from Google maps it has now disappeared.

I have the 1905 Kelly's directory I can look at for you if that helps ?

Not on Montford road.

On Montford street there were two unnamed beerhouses, - at No. 53 William Twigg, beerhouse and at No. 10 Thomas Edward Nother, beerhouse.
