[MOD NOTE] Could you be a bit more explicit as to what this thread is about - and your link seems to just lead to a signup page?

Not what I wanted to hear on Monday morning.

Of all the people that could have shot themselves over the weekend, it turns out to be the creator and wellspring of Gonzo Journalism.

I'm amazed he made it to 67 I guess.

A few words from the man -

Hunter S Thompson
I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me.

Hunter S Thompson
These are bad times for people who like to sit outside the library at dawn on a rainy morning and get ripped to the tits on crank and powerful music.

Hunter S Thompson
Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only real cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a ******* from Hollywood to Las Vegas. Just roll the roof back and screw it on, grease the face with white tanning butter and move out with the music at top volume, and at least a pint of ether.

Hunter S Thompson
The Edge...There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

They don't give a motive for his suicide...was he ill...what a shame..still if he was in pain I understand..may he rest in peace...Never really understood the film though

"We were somewhere around Barnsley, on the edge of Tankersley when the Pale Rider began to take hold.
I remember saying something like “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...” And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Meadowhall.
And a voice was screaming: “Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?”

Well, he was never one to do things by half measures.

Motive? God only knows, if HST chooses to lay it on him that is.

Hoping we will see a few proggies about him. What a guy!

The title says it all about one of my favourite authors.

He will be missed, I'm halfway through 'fear and loathing in las vegas' in some kinda tribute.

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, we were winning....

And that, I think, was the handle -- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave....

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back

Another great HST quote:

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

Follow some of the links posted earlier in the thread!

In the same month as Arthur Miller...two literary greats lost in such a short space of time...they will live on through their works and their contribution will never be forgotten.

I'm quite shocked this Forum is the only place I've seen or heard any reference to Hunter S Thompson's death.

I've not been avidly listening to the news over the last few days, but I've not been ignoring it either.

Not a word.

The world clearly belongs to the chavs .....

StarSparkle :(

PS - I don't want to sound overly cynical, but it makes me wonder how much coverage Arthur Miller's death would have got if he hadn't been married to Marilyn?

I remember the character 'Uncle Duke' in the Doonsebury cartoons (my days as a Guardian reader return to haunt me) who was based on Thompson.

My favourite quotation from Thompson has to be :

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

Definitely one of the 'better to burn out than it is to rust' school of life.
